This is unforgivable.
If you didn't already think that Facebook was one of the most unethical and harmful organisations on the planet, this will change your mind.
In the book Careless People, written by a Facebook insider (before she got fired) it details how in 2017 the platform offered advertisers the opportunity to target young girls in a state of feeling "worthless" and "insecure".
In fact, teams prepared presentations and proposals to beauty brands so they could reach teenagers in this fragile emotional state.
It was called "emotional targeting." It reality, it's a total manipulation and exploitation of the vulnerable.
When I read this, my jaw dropped and my heart sank. We already knew that Facebook actively TRIED to make its users addicted to their platforms. And for some reason we're ok with that. But to not only understand when their users - teenage girls - are depressed, but to also use that data for profit is as unethical as you can get.
What Facebook - and other social platforms - have done to the world's youth is abominable. And to be honest? We've all enabled it.
And you can tell we're addicted, because no matter what hideous sh*t we hear about what Facebook and its leaders do, we just keep logging on to Instagram.
Young people are navigating a social media world that we handed them, because we got excited about the commercial potential of the internet. A bunch of awful people decided that making money was more important than the wellbeing of the world's young women.
And now they're going to have to live with that mental damage forever. It's so gross.
