Over the last year I've set up space to make the tiles I always wanted to have on building projects in the early 2000s, with rich colours and a clean, solid feel. (2/3)

So thrilled with how the big bowl came out! I dipped it in stormy blue, then used a bulb syringe to run honey flux down from the edges. Then I added a little bit of Toby’s red for contrast. #pottery #ceramicglaze

Lea Halpern: Ceramic brooch from her Dutch period l (1930-40) with a wonderful green-yellow crackled glaze. Signed.
The dominant yellow-green hues and the cracked texture of the glaze align with the use of lead and uranium.

Three porcelain test tiles in the foreground. Left to right: The left tile is a gritty primitive attempt at making a rock glaze using local materials. The middle tile is another attempt using local materials that created a tan, cracking glaze. The right tile is finally looking like a clear glaze! Yay!

Meet my Sky Islands clear glaze! The recipe consists of 90% locally scavenged calcium carb, quartz, and feldspar (1st photo). 2nd photo shows earlier attempts at making a clear desert mineral/rock glaze.

Long time no post, I have a few glaze projects spinning but here’s some winners from the last phase of testing for the blue/purple iridescent crystalline glazes. Pushing further into the purple range and even into some peachy pink/coppery tones

It didn’t come out as interestingly as I hoped it would, but I do like the way it looks! I’m not sure how much the oribe and floating blue contributed to the finished glaze but I think I will definitely try slate blue over Panama turquoise again! #pottery #ceramicglaze

Two pieces with bands of glaze have Opulence Cast Iron as an exterior base, then Amaco Midnight Run on the rim, then a band of Tourmaline, and a rim of Ancient Copper over the Midnight Run. Inside, they have Midnight Run underneath a band of Tourmaline, and a top of Ancient Copper. There's a ring of plain Tourmaline and a center circle of plain Ancient Copper at the very bottom without a flux. There's a thin band of Oatmeal just where the Ancient Copper and the Tourmaline meet on the exterior. Midnight Run is a flux glaze, so it will be interesting to see what it does.

Small, carved/altered piece has a base that I've painted with black underglaze, then all the rest is just plain Ancient Copper. I'm experimenting with painting the bases of pieces with underglaze, as it doesn't stick to the kiln shelves, and it's interesting to me to cover up the white clay body while still having the bottom wax resisted to keep the glaze off. Some of the underglaze has wiped off the bottom since I painted it on after it was bisqued, then waxed it once dry. I don't necessarily mind that on this piece because it's a very organic, rustic piece and the wear could add to that feeling, but in the future I think I'll underglaze the bottoms (if that's the plan for the piece) at the leather hard/bone dry stage, then bisque the underglaze so it doesn't move when wax is applied. πŸ€“
