Al centro del grande concetto artistico si trova una brillante sfera luminosa con un nucleo quasi bianco e strati esterni color oro e arancio. Questa sfera rappresenta la galassia più luminosa in una collisione tra due gruppi di galassie, iniziata centinaia di milioni di anni fa. Il gas e la polvere di quella collisione sono stati lanciati nello spazio intergalattico formando lunghi flussi mareali. Nell’illustrazione, i flussi mareali appaiono come sciabolate blu curve che si allontanano dalla sfera brillante. Vicino alla fine di ciascun flusso mareale si trova una striscia o un’ellisse arancione luminosa. Queste forme brillanti rappresentano galassie più piccole, alcune delle quali mostrano bracci a spirale se osservate da vicino. Un flusso mareale si estende verso l’angolo superiore sinistro, poi si piega verso il basso, passando lungo il percorso davanti a due galassie arancioni luminose. Vicino alla fine di questo flusso c’è una piccolissima galassia e una sorgente a raggi X, visibili nell’inserto in primo piano. L’altro concetto artistico nell’inserto mostra una vista laterale ravvicinata di come potrebbe apparire il post-collisione di stelle di neutroni. L’evento è stato inizialmente rilevato tramite un burst di raggi gamma osservato lungo il getto, che ha poi attivato osservazioni a raggi X di follow-up con Chandra e altri telescopi a raggi X.

Queste immagini mostrano la stella HD 61005 con i raggi X osservati dal Chandra X-ray Observatory insieme ai dati nell’infrarosso del telescopio spaziale Hubble. Una vista in luce ottica ottenuta da un telescopio in Cile mostra il campo più ampio in cui si trova HD 61005. Recentemente gli astronomi hanno utilizzato Chandra per scoprire un’“astrosfera”, una bolla modellata dal vento stellare, attorno a HD 61005: la prima mai osservata attorno a una stella simile al Sole.
