Miscellaneous extra parts and tools strewn about a table.

The Steam downloads page is downloading some games. The PC is in the bottom of our entertainment center.

Built my own #SteamMachine with #ChimeraOS today. Expensive, but #Microcenter had bundles with the 7800X3D, motherboard and 32GB of RAM for like $500.

I may have to move it or do some modifications to our entertainment center, depends on how thermals act under a gaming load.

PC gaming has been popular for decades, but there’s still something charming about classic game consoles that booted quickly, featured a minimal operating system, and let you play games by inserting a cartridge or disc. **Kazeta **is a new Linux-based operating system that brings that kind of experience to modern PCs. Developed by the founder of ChimeraOS over the past six months, the operating system was introduced to the public over the weekend and it’s now available for download and installation on PCs that meet the minimum system requirements. Here’s the basic idea behind Kazeta: it turns your PC into a console that plays games installed on SD cards or other removable media. And that’s pretty much it. You’ll need to prepare your own SD cards by formatting your media, copying game files, and optionally printing custom labels – each card should only hold a single game. Then you can insert it into your computer, turn on the PC, and boot right into the game. The SD card is treated as read-only, while game data is saved automatically to your computer’s internal storage. If you boot the computer with no media inserted you’ll be greeted by a simple menu for viewing and managing save states for various games. Behind the scenes it does this via a Linux-based operating system that should be able to handle modern PC games as well as older titles and classic console games (via emulation). It’s a pretty interesting mix of modern and retro features that offers a simpler way to jump right into your games without the need to learn how to navigate all of the system menus you get with game clients like Steam, the Epic Games Launcher, or GOG Galaxy. But since it _doesn’t_ include those launchers, you can only prepare your carts with DRM-free titles like those you can find on GOG and itch.io. At this point there are a bunch of things Kazeta doesn’t do. There’s no support for dual booting the operating system or running it in a virtual machine. Hybrid graphics are not supported (so you cannot toggle between an integrated GPU and discrete GPU). There’s no support for multiple monitors. And there’s no support for Bluetooth controllers (although the developer has indicated plans to add this feature eventually). - Finally I'm trying #ChimeraOS. I've used it before and liked it. I do really appreciate the fact that its installer is just "We're going on this drive, are you sure?" and that's it. The graphical hiccup when switching in and out of desktop mode is gone 7/
