It’s fast, but tracks. The only serious missteps I’ve seen so far are: missing the last 28 years of FN constitutional developments, esp WRT BC, not replacing the carbon levy with perf regs for trans & buildings, & the active induced innovation side of #climpol as opposed to passive carbon pricing.
There was a recent paper that indicated people have a hard time with “frog in the water” problems, but if you can reframe it as “we didn’t have regular continent wide wild fire & smoke events until >decade ago”, a “this/that” framing, we might have more success with political support for #climpol
As folks opine on the O&G GHG cap vs full Pathways CCS implementation tradeoff: 1) that’s what the cap was supposed to cause anyway, & 2) 90%+ capture rate CCS is fully possible for H2 prod for upgrading, but has never been done at a commercial scale for gas combustion for heat. #cdnpoli #climpol
I sometimes wonder if the only hope for North American #climpol is for the EU and China to go full bananas on it and apply #CBAMs to us.
Interesting point for #climpol. The EU ETS II, set for 2027, introduces a separate cap & trade system for emissions from fuels used in buildings and road transport. The system targets a 42% reduction in CO2 by 2030 re 2005 and places the obligation on fuel suppliers not end-users
After flirting with it up to 2008-9 the Conservatives turned away from their “natural” climate policy. If PP is firmly defeated on rejection of industrial pricing too that will force the Cons to return to the drawing board and rethink their approach to #climpol, otherwise they will never regain govt
What I found more interesting from a #climpol POV, amongst many things, was where household agents shift their response to prices depending on whether they consider goods “transactional” (where c-pricing would work well), to “welfare providing”, where indiff curves shift depending on starting point
