Treasure Island A Poetic Variation Chapter 8 Charmed and Chosen 1/4 The Squire sent me down the lane With letter sealed and duty clear— "To Silver—take this note with care. And mind your tongue once you are there." My boots rang hollow on the stone, The tavern sign swayed in the breeze— A glass that winked with painted light, While doubt crept cold around my knees. One leg—the Captain's dying words Still echoed in my restless mind. Could noble Squire choose a man Whose shadow held what death might find? The door swung wide—I stepped inside To warmth and light and polished wood. No pirates' den of smoke and grime, But clean as any tavern should. The tavern hush was rich with spice, With burnished brass and polished floor. The air was warm, the light was nice— Not like the dens I'd feared before. And there—upon a three-legged stool— A man who made my fears seem small. His voice was bright, his posture clean, His crutch beside him by the wall. "Now, lad!" he called with cheerful voice, "Step closer—don't you stand and stare! You'll be young Hawkins, I'll be bound— The Squire said you'd venture here." He rose and gripped his crutch with ease, Then hopped behind the polished bar. "A moment, lad—just help me please— These thirsty souls have come from far." A weathered man held up his cup, His beard was stained with salt and grime. Silver filled it, nodding up— "Aye, Morgan, sea's been hard this time." Another patron, rough and lean, Sat quiet in the corner shade. He started words—then Silver's keen Eye caught his own, and silence stayed. "Now where was I?" Silver returned, His voice like honey, warm and bright. "Ah yes—the Java seas that burned With typhoon's wild and raging might." "I've sailed with captains, good and bad, And seen the ports that make men glad. There's not a sea I haven't crossed, Nor storm where good men weren't lost."
2/4 "An evil wind off the Java shore Once cracked the mizzen clean in two. We rode it out by candle’s breath— Not every crew would make it through." "But you, my lad, you've got the look Of one who'd read the ocean's book. Those eyes—they see what others miss— A sailor's gift, and nothing less." His tales, not storms, had filled the room— No warnings sharp, no ghostly plot. My doubts fell off like morning dew— This man was warm where others were not. A chair scraped sharp. A shadow fled— That twisted gait I knew too well. “Black Dog!” I gasped, my pulse turned red— The name rang out like warning bell. “Stop him!” I cried, my voice too loud— But Silver’s men had moved as one. They chased him through the thickening crowd— And light and noise and breath were gone. He turned to me with open grin, His crutch set firm, his voice like balm. "No pirate slips where I’m around— And you, my boy, you kept us calm." "The gall!" he roared. "To drink with me— A swab like that! I’ll see him pay! You’ve done me proud, lad, yes indeed— A keener eye, I’ve ne’er seen play!" "He came before," I said with heat, "That Black Dog struck our inn with spite. He fought the Captain, drew his blade— Then fled like coward in the night." "At Benbow Inn?" Silver leaned near, His face grew grave, his voice went low. "That villain dared to bring you fear? Tell me, lad—I need to know." He moved with grace despite his lack, From table close to polished rail. "Tell me, lad—about the sack Of troubles at your inn's dark tale." His manner warm, his eyes intent, Like father hearing of his son. "What damage did that devil rent? What harm to you and yours was done?" I told him of the Captain's death, Of pirates come with spite and threat. He listened close to every breath, His face with sympathy beset.
3/4 "Your mother—brave to face such fear, A widow with an inn to keep. And you—so young to persevere When danger came while others sleep." He served a sailor, dark and grim, Who touched his cap and spoke no word. The man's respect was clear to him, Though not a sound from him I heard. "I lost my leg to cannon's roar, But that's the price we sailors pay. Yet here I stand—worth ten or more Of landlubbers who never stray." He poured himself a tot of rum, Then raised it high toward the light. "To those who've gone—may kingdom come Reward the souls who fought the fight." I felt the warmth of kinship grow, This man had faced what I had seen. Though death had dealt us each a blow, We'd both survived what might have been. "But tell me, Jim—what brought you here? The Squire spoke of voyage planned?" His question came both soft and clear, As if he'd help me understand. “The Squire sends this,” I said at last, And placed the letter in his hand. He cracked the seal, then scanned it fast, His eyes too sharp to misunderstand. “He wants to sail? Then so we shall— The crew’s prepared, the ship is near. A finer voyage? None at all— And you, young sir, shall serve us clear.” A sailor passed, with lip half split, One ear a knot of melted skin. He nodded once, then gave a glance— Like wolves that mark their own as kin. "The docks grow rough when daylight fades, And Bristol's full of cutthroat men. A lad alone through twisting shades Might not return to safety's den." He wiped his hands upon his cloth, Then reached to take his coat and hat. "I'll walk you back—I'd be quite wroth If harm should come from where you're at." "That Black Dog fellow—if he's near, Two sets of eyes are better far. And you, my lad, should have no fear When Silver walks beneath the star."
4/4 The evening air was sharp with brine, The harbor lanterns flickered bright. Ship bells rang out in measured time— A sailor's hymn against the night. We walked together to the quay, His stories flowing rich and free. No trace of pirate's brutal way— Just wisdom earned through salt and spray. "You think they caught him?" I inquired. He smiled, but didn’t meet my eye. "Perhaps. A dog that bites his kin Won’t last the night beneath the sky." He draped his arm around my back— His grip was firm, his tone was low. "The sea's no place for timid souls, But you, lad—you were born to go." “You’ll make a sailor, mark me, lad— There’s something bold in how you stand. The sea needs those who feel its pull— Not those who simply follow land.” We passed the quay where shadows pooled, The rigging sang with evening breeze. The water dark, the air grew cooled, While distant voices crossed the seas. The lanterns swayed on creaking masts, Their light like stars on blackened bay. Each ship a ghost of voyages past— Soon I would sail that starlit way. “A finer lad I’ve seldom seen— Mark me, you’re chosen by the tide. There’s ships with fates, and seas with names— And some are called, not just to ride.” The docks grew quiet, sounds grew thin, Just lapping waves and Silver's tread. The night pressed close, the lights grew dim— "Tomorrow, lad," was all he said. My fears dissolved like morning mist, This Silver could not be dismissed. The Squire's choice was wise and true— What finer shipmate ever grew? A dog still barked across the harbor— Then silence came, and drifted farther.
And now the long awaited introduction of John Silver!
