1971 Nutting & Associates Computer Space, the first commercially sold arcade game

Created by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney of Atari fame under a business called Syzygy Engineering. They based it on the 1960’s mainframe game Spacewar!

A 3D printed and glued together part of the computer space arcade cabinet. The top is still missing. Some pieces are clamped or taped together at the moment. One small (in comparison) corner in the front is missing.
Angry yellow post-it stating that it is fragile. (I had someone knock of the layer that goes on next before)
A tiny model of the cabinet is standing in the background.

Most of Computer Space is glued together now!
I've decided that I really don't like the cut 3D model. Yes, the seams are placed more or less strategically, but some pieces seem to be scaled wrong. And there is this corner in the front just missing […]

I've made some significant progress yesterday!
However, I've discovered that
a) one piece is missing
b) I don't trust superglue
c) the individual layers slightly warped while curing
d) I really would have loved registration marks or holes for pegs etc.

A very chaotic workshop with 3D printed pieces in piles. Some of them are already glues together

I've started a big 3D printed puzzle today.
We're building a Computer Space at HI-SCORE!

Set up my computer in place. And my new mouse pad matches my little troopers. I swear I'm getting geekier every day. 😆
(use the pad as support for the screen to not damage the desk fabric, but can fit the mouse on it as well👍)

Took this one off #ComputerSpace (as it won’t work needing to be a normally closed (NC) switch for that game. But for this game (Space Fever) and almost all others a normally open (NO) switch like this will do just fine.

I backed out the switching power supply from #ComputerSpace and installed this NOS linear 5V DC supply that’s the 1996 equivalent to the original. I need to tie in a TV power connection to the isolation transformer next to see if the donor TV picture stabilizes a bit more.

Been out sick but making progress to get back on track. I acquired a NOS linear power supply for #ComputerSpace after deciding using a switcher was dirty. Still haven’t modified the donor TV but I’m building up my confidence.

It appears that my #ComputerSpace chassis (photos 1 & 2 designated as S-E) is pretty much identical to my candidate donor monitor chassis (S-3) in the 3rd and 4th photos. You can clearly see both PCBs are marked as S-3. I’m going to wire the donor reversibly first as a sanity ✅.

Documented last night where the audio (blue), ground (light purple) and video (dark purple/black) outputs from #ComputerSpace splice into the cabinet’s GE S-3 chassis. Documenting how to disable the receiver is next on the to do list.

Was looking closely at my rotted #ComputerSpace chassis and realized the little vintage TV I bought has the same model chassis. It doesn’t use an SF series! It’s an S3 series! Whatever that means!

In today’s #ComputerSpace news— I kinda have sync on the old Apple monochrome monitor. My Toshiba color TV (second photo) can’t get a lock no matter what. I wonder what would happen if I hooked up the 43” Samsung 4K flat screen?

Having a hell of a time getting the #ComputerSpace video to sync. This is the third TV and only success thus far. Composite to VHF adapter. Tried plugging composite in directly and got terrible results. Should I get a B&W Arcade monitor for this instead?

Who knew it would take all day getting this #ComputerSpace electrical hardware looking good? Ish. The vintage 5V DC linear supply is not hooked up but I’ve left it in place for posterity. Sean’s repair work on the game PCBs is immaculate.

I tested continuity on the old #computerspace cord and it was garbage. Ground totally missing? No thanks. Adding an EM Filter to the power wiring because why not?

We are slowly advancing toward playing a game of #ComputerSpace today.

Built a custom control panel harness for the #ComputerSpace so I can take my time restoring the vintage panel electronics. Need to put the game back inside the cabinet and figure out how I’m going to hook up a temp TV for the video now.

Reproducing a #ComputerSpace label in Adobe Illustrator for some switches I’ll never touch. 😂

What to do with the #ComputerSpace control panel is going to take a little bit of time to figure out. I’ve scanned the panel and transparency gels in the meantime. #SOON

I mean didn’t EM arcade games and pinball machines have regular buttons before #ComputerSpace came along? This rickety ass actuator is way overboard for civilians to treat gently.

Getting an old #ComputerSpace button out of the control panel sucked. This one has apparently been fixed to where you can’t solder into the switch contact anymore. Anybody got any old OAK buttons like this lying around? 😂

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get to see how well (or not) the left button I tinted will fit in the #ComputerSpace control panel.

Four coats of lens tint later and this potential replacement button for my #ComputerSpace control panel looks pretty good— until you illuminate it. The real buttons don’t illuminate on the game so perhaps I’ve succeeded?

Going to experiment with these buttons as replacements / alternates on #ComputerSpace. I ordered a single pack of 5 buttons and they (in error) — whomever they are — sent me 5 packs! So now I have 25 buttons to play around with.

I believe this to be the correct configuration of buttons to #ComputerSpace. If I use the red buttons I showed early I could always use lens tint spray and then a gloss coat. Thoughts?
