Cornus deliciosa is a very peculiar plant that you can only find at @archenemyarts for a couple of days.
I experimented with engraving and imitation gold leaf and I'll definitely continue to explore this in the coming year.

A peppy little Pacific Dogwood hybrid has a few brilliant red leaves, now, amidst the green canopy, against a smoke-hazed blue sky. It has pushed through the drought and the heat, kept its leaves (though they are curled back from the long drought), and even produced a crop of tiny distorted fruit. I like these hybrids, even under this stress they are much less prone to disease than Cornus nuttalii when used as a street tree in an exposed sunny spot. The real Pacific Dogwoods are much happier in sheltered bright spots among other trees, not alone in the searing sun in windy parking lots.
The cool nights have brought out a smattering of brilliant red on the Pacific Dogwood hybrids around the Saanich Peninsula! The drought has gibbled the berries though, they are tiny.

北海道の植物を紹介する花壇に植えられていたものです。ゴゼンタチバナとの違いは、花が黒っぽいことと、葉が対生していること、だそうです。言われてみれば確かに、白と黒のコントラストが強くて派手な印象かも？ 葉に関しては、ゴゼンタチバナの葉を意識して見たことがなかったので、よくわかりません。今度ちゃんと見てみよう。

Close up on the central flowers, showing the actual petals and the stamens & pistils. Lurking in the center of this inflorescence was a flower crab spider, maybe Misumena vatia. It caught this bee and was completely unperturbed at my proximity.

#Cornus nuttallii, the Pacific dogwood. The inflorescence consists of 4-6 large white bracts, the showiest part, and the globular cluster of tiny pale yellow flowers in the center.

Prunus volunteer. Growing on a bench in the mountains outside Lillooet. Chances are this started as a cherry pit dropped as garbage by a visitor, human or bird. In the foreground, the branches of the tree with new green/red foliage, and big clusters of white flowers. In the background, blurry, a wooded slope, and in the distance, a snowy peak. Blue sky with puffy clouds.
Cerastium arvense, field chickweed. Against a blurry dark background, a single small white flower, actual size less than 1 cm, and several buds. The petals are shaped like valentine hearts and are white with distinct greygreen stripes leading into the center, where there are pale yellow stamens and pistils.
Collinsia parviflora, small flowereed collinsia. Truly tiny flowers, about 2 mm long, with a couple of buds and seed pods on a stem with linear/ovate leaves. The flowers are tubes with "kissing lips" petals at the distal end. The lower petals are intense cobalt or cerulean blue while the upper ones are pale lavender. Blurry BG.
Cornus nuttallii, Pacific Dogwood tree. The actual flowers are a semi-globular cluster of small buds in the centre of the inflorescence, none of which have opened on this one. Surrounding it are uch larger white petals / sepals, six in this case but commonly also four. Blurry BG.

The fruit starts green and slowly fades into yellow, and eventually red as it ripens. Strange geometrical cell patterns adorn the outside, giving this fruit a mysterious appearance.
#Cornus capitata, the Strawberry #Dogwood. Native to many places in Asia, and an uncommon landscaping plant in the US. I have yet to try this edible fruit, but I have heard it is bitter.
