the first intersection you hit when you get into town. a dirt road juts up against a paved road. one large tree stands on the corner, shurubs with beautiful flowers, a blue sky with little fluffy clouds overhead.
the elephant cloud market, where i had a try-hard burrito named after a dr. seuss character that, ironically, had zero character, despite the fancy description on the menu. two cars are parked in front of the building, which has a blue and purple mural of what look like pyramids painted on it. a mountain in the sangre de cristo mountain range towers in the background.
a small, white clapboard building in a state of disrepair, with an equally dilapidated truck, half rusted, in the background. the building and the truck are easily 55-60 years old.
the only gas station in town, or indeed for like 40 miles in any direction. there were no prices at or on the pumps (only one of which worked). when you're the only game in town, i reckon you can charge whatever you want.

i met this gentleman and his mule as i approached the stupa. they both had walked from taos, NM, to crestone—about 111 miles.
the stupa, consecrated in 2005, is just up the road from my airbnb. various relics were placed inside before it was sealed. these relics are said to hold ancestral spirits, who may grant a wish to those who bring an offering or meditate earnestly to them.
offerings left at the stupa: 3 seashells and a vajra.
