Dear Girls Who Code,

My name is Nomie Keusch Baker and I have been part of the Girls Who Code community for over 10 years. In 2014, I participated in SIP. I led my university’s club 2027-2020. I was a lead instructor for virtual SIP 2020, 2022, and 2023. This community is near and dear to my heart.

I am writing a physical letter to you because your team deleted my ticket when I emailed you. This alone raises concerns as an alum of GWC. We should encourage discussions, not silence differing perspectives.

I have reached out throughout the years to express concern over funding and philosophy. I have seen GWC partner with Meta, Google and Amazon, companies that perpetuate violence against minorities and cooperate with autocratic governments. I have seen GWC drop certain sponsors over allegations of sexual assault, which I commend.

Lately, I haven’t been seeing anything from GWC, and that’s a huge problem: silence is complicity.

This is not a perfect letter, as I have many more to write. I am prioritizing the point: you must speak out against unethical technology. You must condemn what is happening in the government. You must stand by trans and nonbinary young people, and immigrants regardless of their legal status. You must call for the GWC community to be vigilant. After all, you taught us to be brave, not perfect, right?

Please practice what you preach. Drop all your sponsors who are cutting DEI. I guarantee that other sponsors who genuinely support women will fill in the gaps.

It is shameful and embarrassing that you have not sent a single email since January 20th. Where have you been? I appreciate your Lunar New Year email on January 27th and your Black History Month email on February 3rd. Please continue to highlight diverse celebrations, while also calling out unethical technology.

Again: please stand up for trans, nonbinary, immigrant, and undocumented community members. We are watching you, we are taking note of who is actually being b…
