This looks awesome & also a reminder that the ethics of public health surveillance can be complicated. Sometimes, as in #DataDisaggregation contexts, undersurveillance is problematic. In other moments, as Professor Powell suggests here, oversurveillance is ethically concerning.

Some in our community push back against data disaggregation because they see it as divisive. I see no reason why better data to help us understand who we are in community with should be viewed as a threat.

It’s as simple as this: We cannot address community needs and empower our most underserved community members if we don’t know where those needs are. We cannot serve our community when we ignore or refuse to understand our community. #datadisaggregation #datajustice
I have been covering the #datadisaggregation fight at Reappropriate for years, because I was convinced by the advocacy of these groups early on that #datajustice is one of the most central civil rights issues of our AA and NHPI...
Work by groups like @searac, @EmpoweredPI, @HIPcalifornia, @APIAHF and so many others have been driving the movement for #datajustice for decades, making the case for why we need #datadisaggregation of AA & NHPI public health, education, economic data.
More forthcoming over @prismreports so stay tuned for that.
One thing I want to emphasize is that the #datadisaggregation #datajustice movement is not new — in fact it has its roots back decades out of powerful advocacy led by SEA and NHPI advocates, who continue to do work now

This is why so many Asian American activists work so tirelessly on the #datadisaggregation issue. We can be united as Asian Americans while we demand that state and federal agencies do their part to make sure data collected about our communities are representative and granular.
It is offensive and unacceptable that opponents of #datadisaggregation — including some conservative Asian Americans — are adopting scare mongering tactics paralleling efforts that would bring resources to help AsAms to JA incarceration and Nazi Germany. We can do better.
