Narratives debunked
We chuckled, and one of us shook their head: ‘The more I think about dominance the less sense it makes. We can achieve so much more if we put our heads together. We can enjoy so much more if we let everyone make their unique contributions. And I bet that if we nurture each other, we will be nurtured by each other. And if we nurture the planet, it will nurture us.’
One of us sighed. ‘Here on our island it is so obvious how generous, abundant and diverse nature is. Nature is alive, always in motion, always digesting itself, always following its cycles and constantly adjusting and remodelling itself to maintain or restore balance. We need to translate this for us, for our societies, for our economies.’
‘Let me connect some of our dots. We spoke of the divides between people as a potential root cause of war — not just the divides between genders but also between people of different ages, abilities, origins and more, and not least between those who assume a role of dominance and those who suffer the dominant. These divides are partly created by the narratives of the strong and the weak, the predator and the prey, the superior and the subordinate, narratives which are deeply ingrained in our minds. These narratives tell us that dominance is a natural imperative which every creature of worth seeks. But taking a closer look at nature offers another perspective and one that is more promising because it shows that, for example, the lion doesn’t kill for dominance but for sustenance and as part of its role in the ecosystem, and with that the lion contributes to the overall balance in nature — not to some gamble for power.’
