I like drawing cute things, but it's also fun to draw alien innards!
There were existing files from the original dev team for dark, meaty blood & gore that didn't quite match the "snatcher" enemies Duke faces. The original silhouettes were good, so I masked and painted over them.

Several sketches starting from pure silhouette to rough blocking in to a more complete sketch of a man in bulky bomb-proof armour. He hefts a double-barrelled shotgun with a robotic arm.
Captain Cole was a fun concept to do; usually I don't do bulky character designs, but Cole being a bomb technician among other things was a challenge to capture, designing a suit that could get the job done but also give him some leeway to move.
I like shotguns.

Another idea that never really went anywhere was the idea of "nuclear samurai", members of the EDF who were sworn to protect sites like nuclear power plants or even waste storage. These NPCs would be neutral to Duke and his bravado, taking their job very seriously.

Early on, we were mulling over how Bombshell wanted to present herself while still being "period-accurate" to when DNF2001 was being made. Her design has stuck with the classic tank top, but I wondered if influences like The Matrix would stick here.
