Further to the below, a while back i wrote an intro, "mdoc(7): a language for writing man pages". The mdoc(7) macros can be used on both Linux and BSDs - whether via groff+man-db or mandoc - and, unlike the man(7) macros typically used in Linux man pages, are semantics-oriented.
