Have a look at the scan. And look again. You might think this is a tracheostomy patient, but it’s not. This is a sideway (saggital) view of the airway of a patient who has had a total laryngectomy. Direct airway into the trachea. No voicebox. #headandneck #ENTsecrets #headandneckcancer #surgeon
Surgeon with bloodied face.

How did I get here? A long surrender in the same direction. Many surgeons will have a similar journey of 12 hour days 6 days a week plus additional oncall, research, exams, supervisions, conferences, presentations, etc. #surgeon #surgicallife #surgery #ENTsecrets
It’s a beautiful Saturday in Melbourne. Where else would you rather be than in the hospital with people you like running a mock exam drill for future ENT surgeon candidates? I love the skullbase. So exquisitely beautiful. #ENTsurgery #surgeon #ENT #ENTsecrets

Microlaryngoscopy is a procedure involving suspending the larynx and using a microscope to image diseases of the voice box and airway. We can then do biopsy, remove cancer with laser, inject the vocal folds, suture, implant, excise, etc. It’s a beautiful procedure on your voice box. #ENTsecrets

In Australia, examining the ear with the therapy pet in situ can be challenging.

Speaking at a conference
My first time in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia was absolutely amazing. The extreme hospitality of the people. The amazing cuisines. The magnificent collaboration. These kinds of conferences and connections help me be a better surgeon for my patients. #ENTsecrets #surgery #surgeon #ENTsurgery #headandneck
We explored old castles and buildings in Al Qatif, a place rich with history and art. Precious times with my 2 previous fellows here and their head of unit. #entsecrets #ENT #surgery #surgeon I
Great use of technology. Two cameras on the live demonstration (one wide view, one zoom on hands). One endoscopic view and one PowerPoint slide. Bringing the learner closer to the action. 2/2 #entsecrets #ENT #surgery #surgeon
Lecturing
Demonstrating a technique
The best way to master a topic is to teach it. When you prepare to teach, you are forced to think hard about a topic, to break it down and then synthesise it for others to make sense. The process of deep thinking about a topic helps you master it. 1/2 #ENTsecrets #ENT #surgery #surgeon
There’s a lot of #ENT in medicine, history, humanity, story. Learned a few things about the amazing people and history of #Bahrain. Can’t help but look at some of it from the perspective of a #HeadandNeck #surgeon. #entsecrets #surgery
1. Gas in the orbit and gas in the brain. 2. Gas and abscess in the orbit. 3. Abscess in the orbit. 4. Medial rectus myositis.
In all these cases, patients presented with eye symptoms. But the origin of the disease is in the nose. We drained the abscess in the first 3 patients through the nose, going behind the eyeball. If you’re not sure, seek a specialist opinion. #ENT #Surgery #ENTsecrets #surgeon #headandneck #rhinology
Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House
Not a bad day to be out of the operating theatre. That building seems like a familiar shape. Maybe because that’s how I randomly stack the dishes and bowls… #operahouse #sydney #entsecrets #ENT #surgery #surgeon

Surgical instrument tray
Every instrument in my surgical tray has been designed with a clear purpose in mind. The scalpel, scissors, needle holders and retractors all work together for a bigger purpose. They are merely tools, but in the master’s hands they become instruments of healing. #ENTsecrets #ENT #surgery #surgeon
Endotracheal tube in the nose
Usually we intubate patients through the mouth. Sometimes when I need to do complex work in the oral cavity such as tumour surgery or drooling surgery we may intubate through the nose or even insert a temporary tracheostomy. #ENTsecrets #ENT #surgery #surgeon
Most of my talks are on complex paediatric airway, head & neck tumours, leadership, culture and clinician wellbeing. I am far away from mastering these topics. Come with me as I learn and explore these issues on my timeline. #entsecrets #ENT #surgery #surgeon #leadership 2/2

Anatomy of the face
“I cant feel my face when I’m with you…” well that’s great because as a head & neck surgeon I know exactly how to anaesthetise different parts of your face. Here’s a simplified section. Don’t cut this. Can’t cut that. #ENT #entsecrets #headandneck #surgery #surgeon
