Criminals cause water shortages in Erongo towns Niël Terblanché A fresh wave of copper cable theft has disrupted water supply to several Erongo towns in the space of one week.  Utilities were forced to ration limited water reserves while technicians rushed to restore power to affected boreholes. The latest theft occurred just before midnight on Saturday, 21 June, when thieves cut the Ruby Main overhead power line supplying the Swartbank and Rooibank boreholes, which feed Walvis Bay.  The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) said the attack immediately cut off 650 cubic metres of water per hour to the port town. NamWater’s spokesperson, Lot Ndamanomhata, said engineers had to redirect a reduced 200 cubic meters per hour from the High Dune and Dorop South wells to keep some supplies flowing. “The Namibian Police and Erongo RED responded swiftly to the incident; however, the perpetrators managed to flee the scene. Erongo RED crews worked through the night and had power flowing again by 17:00 on Sunday, after which pumping resumed and normal operations have since been restored,” he said. Ndamanomhata condemned the thefts, saying they undermine national development. “These types of crimes are unpatriotic,” he said. He urged residents to report any suspicious activity near water infrastructure. Just days earlier, residents of Uis faced a similar disruption when vandals removed cables from the power line supplying the Nei-Neis Water Scheme.  The boreholes and booster stations there are the town’s only source of drinking water. NamWater apologised to residents and assured them that the water supply would resume once electricity was restored. On 17 June, Henties Bay residents woke to find that 13 Erongo RED poles on the Omdel line had been cut down and stripped of copper.  The theft halted electricity supply to the Omdel borehole field, causing Henties Bay’s reservoir to drop to 17% by midday.  Swakopmund, also supplied by Omdel, was unaffected due to its intake from the Wlotzkasbaken desalination plant. The Henties Bay municipality connected a generator to one borehole to restore some pumping.  NamWater technicians joined Erongo RED crews to replace the damaged poles.  The town council urged residents to use water sparingly while repairs continued.  Water tankers were sent to assist both Henties Bay and Uis, where the reservoir had dropped to 40% following an earlier cable theft. Police have not confirmed whether the three incidents are connected, but the rapid succession has placed pressure on the region’s ageing infrastructure and renewed calls for tighter security around water supply systems. Ndamanomhata warned that stolen copper cables divert funds from infrastructure expansion to emergency repairs, slowing efforts to meet the demands of Erongo’s growing population. He said the water supply has resumed in Walvis Bay, and pumping has restarted in both Uis and Henties Bay after damaged lines were fixed.

Cricket Namibia proposes stadium project in Erongo Erasmus Shalihaxwe Cricket Namibia’s chief executive officer, Johan Muller, has asked the Erongo regional governor, Neville Andre, to allocate land for the construction of an international cricket stadium in the region. Muller made the request this week during the opening of the Mondesa Cricket Hub in Swakopmund.  The new facility, located at Hanganeni Primary School, is part of Cricket Namibia’s drive to bring the sport closer to communities and give young players in the coastal town a chance to train on proper turf. “Honourable governor, we purposefully invited you to the new Cricket Namibia ground in Windhoek, and we hosted you on the first level of the new building while it was still a construction site. We came to you with this approach – give us land in your region to develop this facility. We are ready; as Cricket Namibia, we are ready to build. We want to build a second international cricket facility in Namibia, and we want to build it in your region,” said Muller. He said Swakopmund has been key to the development of various sports and should also host an international standard stadium.  Muller noted that the Erongo region has produced players who went on to represent the national team, the Eagles. “Honourable, we are committed, we are ready and we are waiting for your appointment on Friday, and then maybe we can drive this thing forward,” he said. The cricket hub was opened in partnership with Langer Heinrich Uranium.  Muller thanked Langer Heinrich Uranium for its support and commitment to developing young talent. “We are incredibly grateful to Langer Heinrich Uranium for believing in the power of sport and investing in the community. This hub is more than just a training ground; it’s a platform of hope and opportunity. We look forward to seeing the talent this facility will nurture and the positive impact it will have across the region,” he said. Meanwhile, Andre praised Cricket Namibia for its efforts in growing the sport across the country and raising the nation’s international profile. “I want to thank Cricket Namibia for achieving this. We are a country that is participating in international competitions. And, for a small country like ours that is now hosting international games, it is because of our collaboration and the hard work of our leadership at Cricket Namibia. We must be hopeful that more is still to come. We must unite and hold hands because we want a better Namibia,” said Andre. The launch of the Mondesa Cricket Hub was attended by regional and local leaders, including Swakopmund deputy mayor Suamma Kautondokwa, Langer Heinrich Uranium managing director Johan Roux, Hanganeni Primary School principal Bertha Kadhila, and players from Cricket Namibia’s High Performance programme.

Uis community appeals for facility upgrades The Uis community, in the Dâures constituency in the Erongo region, has appealed for the upgrading of the settlement to a village or town, so that they can access more and better services. Topping the list of priority areas are the clinic, more police visibility, social services, and amenities that are overwhelmed by demands from the growing population. Dâure Daman Traditional Authority senior councillor Herman Naruseb, under whose jurisdiction the settlement falls, says Uis has experienced a mining boom that has attracted many people. “The growing population has stretched services at the clinic which regularly runs out of drug supplies, leaving patients stranded,” he said on Wednesday. Naruseb appealed for the clinic to be upgraded to a health centre to offer more services to the community. “The clinic can have a doctor and an ambulance on site instead of outreach visits where a doctor comes once a month,” he said. He cited a recent accident involving 10 people where finding an ambulance to ferry them to a bigger health centre was a challenge. Naruseb said the community brought their concerns to the attention of former deputy minister of gender equality and social services Bernadette Jagger in May last year, and she promised to take them up with the relevant line ministries. He said challenges were also highlighted at a workshop on gender-based violence, human trafficking and other social ills in February this year. The challenges at the clinic were also echoed by retired nurse and community activist Mini /Uiseb, who says when the doctor visits, there are too many people that the doctor might not see them all. He says the three nurses are sometimes overwhelmed by the workload, compromising the quality of service delivered at the clinic built during the colonial era. “If Uis is upgraded to a village or town, other services will also be upgraded,” he says, adding that the police are stretched thin and do not adequately cover the settlement. Naruseb said the population increase has brought with it social challenges like teenage pregnancies, as well as alcohol and drug abuse, and called for a social worker. Concerned community member Jeffrey Matsuib, who has lived at the settlement for 39 years, blames social ills on the lack of recreation facilities in the settlement to take young people away from bars and drugs. The settlement’s chief executive, Amigo Honneb, says the rising population was straining water supplies, resulting in the old pipe installed 50 years ago failing to cope with the pressure, leading to frequent bursts. He says there was talk of upgrading Uis, which falls under the Erongo Rural Council, to have its own councillors this year. Established in 1958 as a workers’ settlement, the settlement grew around the tin mine until it was shut down in 1991 when tin prices collapsed, leading to job losses and a reduction in the quality of life at Uis. Uis residents allege police brutality Residents of Uis, in Namibia’s Erongo region, have raised serious allegations of police brutality following recent arrests linked to ongoing disputes over illegal mining activities and traditional leadership. This comes after allegations that the community petrol bombed the house of Dâure Daman chief Sagarias Seibeb (68) last week. The Namibian has been informed that the aggrieved community has raised the issues with the inspector general’s office. Andrew John-Kelly (48), one of the arrested community members, alleges that he was beaten and kicked at the police holding cells. He was later transferred to Omaruru hospital for emergency treatment. “I was kicked all over my body by the police, hit with the gun and beaten on the back and even on my private parts,” he says. According to John-Kelly, the incident occured after the police lured community members to the traditional authority offices. “The community has been guarding the offices because for four years it was not operational. However, when the police came, they told us we can enter the building, but then they locked me and other elderly people inside and arrested us,” he says. John-Kelly is not the only victim. According to some witnesses, a 71-year-old man was allegedly beaten by the police in a van. Community member McDonald Gaweseb (24) says the police tricked the residents into the offices so they could lock them up. “It is painful what they did to us. They trapped and misled us into going into those offices so that they could arrest us,” he says. This comes after concerns the Uis community has been raising over illegal mining at the settlement and claims that traditional authority leaders are allegedly benefiting from deals made with Chinese nationals involving the area’s natural resources, while the community is languishing in poverty. The community has also been alleging that some of their ancestral graves were removed to accommodate mining companies. According to Gaweseb, allegations of the chief’s house being petrol bombed are false. “I was also beaten up with a gun to the head, and until today my head is still in pain. Allegations that we bombed the chief’s house are not true,” he says. Meanwhile, the police have denied the allegations. In an interview with The Namibian last week, Erongo police commander commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona denied reports that violence erupted in the process of removing protestors. “It must be made very clear: the police did not assault any person, old or young. Those who claim they were assaulted or those who carry the reports that the police assaulted people must produce the proof,” he said. Kupembona said the incident saw several people arrested, including community activist Jimmy //Areseb and a pensioner. Parts of the building have been damaged by the fire, but the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The suspects, aged 29, 37, 47 and 71, are facing charges of arson, contravening the Explosives Act, the possession and supply of explosives, and violating bail conditions. Kupembona, however, said only one person has been charged over the petrol bombing and will appear in the Omaruru Magistrate’s Court, while those that were not involved have been released. The suspect reportedly used beer bottles filled with petrol and cloth to create firebombs, which were allegedly thrown onto the roof and into Seibeb’s home. Dâure Daman Traditional Authority spokesperson Martin Matsuib says the dispute has been ongoing for some time. “The group that did this called themselves the ‘concerned group’, and for a while they have been spreading fake news about the traditional authority. “They have been wanting to depose of the chief since 2014,” he says. “We do not fire chiefs. We only gazette the chiefs on recommendation of the community and the customary laws of the traditional authorities,” he adds. Erongo governor calls for collaboration to solve social ills Erongo governor Neville Andre at a prayer session and gender-based violence meeting at Walvis Bay on Thursday said social workers from the Ministry of Health and Social Services recorded 10 401 social problems by individuals and families from April 2024 to March 2025. With 11% coming from gender-based violence (GBV) problems, Andre reiterated the need for more data from various sectors that deal with such cases for a full picture of what is happening in the region. He noted that GBV perpetrators might also be suffering from some personality disorders, undiagnosed psychiatric illnesses, unresolved past trauma and adverse childhood experiences. “Communities need to conduct their own research to understand GBV causes in their respective context as well. It is very sad and worrisome that we lose lives because of violence, as it threatens the right to life, safety and security,” we lose lives because of violence, as it threatens the right to life, safety and security,” he said. He motivated collaborative approaches to address such critical issues. “Engaging diverse stakeholders, including the government, civil society and communities, is essential for creating sustainable change in attitudes, behaviours, and policies that perpetuate GBV. . . By coordinating services, survivors can access the necessary medical, psychological, legal and social support in a timely and efficient manner. This avoids unnecessary repetition of stories and minimises further trauma,” he said. The post Erongo governor calls for collaboration to solve social ills appeared first on The Namibian.

Mental health foundation initiated at Walvis Bay Erongo governor Neville Andre says addressing social ills relating to mental health is a crucial step towards closer collaboration and stronger partnerships in building safer communities. Andre called on society, including the government, businesses, community leaders and private citizens, to collaborate in the fight against ills like emotional abuse, physical violence and postpartum depression that are fought in silence daily by individuals. He was speaking at the launch of the Shahula Foundation at Walvis Bay on Saturday. The foundation aims to create long-term impact by implementing prevention strategies, building support networks, and raising awareness about the many layers of abuse and mental health. The non-profit organisation featured various individuals who narrated their life experiences and how they navigated through life traumas while motivating community members. The theme was ‘His and Her Story Matters’. “Tonight is a statement that we refuse to be silent in the face of pain, suffering and injustice. It is a commitment to building a region where every man, woman and child feels safe, supported, and valued. In the Erongo region, as in the rest of Namibia, the scourge of domestic violence remains a hard reality. Reports from the police show that cases of gender-based violence are consistently among the most common crimes in our region. Behind every number is a story: a broken home, a shattered dream, a lost soul trying to find their way back,” Andre said. The foundation has a mission to restore hope, rebuild confidence, and walk beside every individual on their journey towards healing, self-empowerment and a vision of securing a world where nobody suffers in silence. Foundation founder Justine Amadhila highlighted the importance of showing people they matter in a society where many are battling under the weight of mental dysfunction. “This foundation exists for men and women, for the boy child and the girl child, and for every individual, regardless of age, who has experienced domestic violence, emotional abuse, postpartum depression, or the overwhelming weight of mental health challenges. “We are here for those who feel they have lost themselves, and for those who are still trying to find their way back home to themselves. The Shahula Foundation was created to become a safe space where healing is not a privilege, but a right, where no one is left behind, and every story is respected and held with compassion,” she said. The foundation plans to have programmes and services that include safe housing for individuals and families that are escaping abuse, a mother-baby bond programme for postpartum healing, legal advocacy and guidance to help survivors navigate justice, mental health support and counseling, skills development and financial empowerment.
