#FF2025

@danielvanstrien.bsky.social has published his workshop slides on #opensource AI for #GLAM 's

I consider his readworthy contribution as the AI complement to my reflections on open data (and their shades) published here:

Here's alt text for the meme:

Alt text: "Flex Tape meme format. Top panel: Phil Swift (labeled 'Library Systems Vendor') aggressively spraying water representing 'Outdated systems, metadata issues, disjointed search and complex user needs.' Bottom panel: A hand slapping Flex Tape underwater, with the tape labeled 'AI-powered chat interface.'"

This captures the joke that vendors are positioning AI chat as a quick fix for deep-seated library infrastructure problems—a bit like slapping tape on a leak rather than fixing the plumbing.

Just posted my slides from the AI4LAM #FF2025 workshop on open source AI for GLAMs.

Probably slides on their own aren't that useful, but they do feature one of my growing collection of libraries-and-AI memes, so there's that danielvanstrien.xyz/slides.html

This year has been extremely productive with regard to the AI & commons debate, as well as in view of the publication of open, public domain datasets.

Might be of interest to the #ff2025 crowd who viewed @kmcdono.bsky.social and @latest.allmaps.org session. Placename text + historic GIS.

One final thank you to everyone who made #FF2025 so good - it was a huge team effort! Safe travels to the non-Londoners! I'm off to Melbourne for a few weeks - happy to share the 'best of' over coffee with folk there!

There were many great things to learn from attending #ff2025, but possibly the most surprising thing to discover was that pints are still under £8 in pubs around the BL.

A rejuvenating trip to #ff2025 at the @britishlibrary.bsky.social. Great to spend 2 days in a room of likeminded folks, exploring how AI can be used for social and informational good, while avoiding fools, pitfalls and bear traps. Am looking forward to hanging out more in GLAM again in 2026.

Encouragingly similar to Mike Keller’s closing reflections encouraging deep reading, deep thinking, and deep respect in libraries, archives, and museums even as they engage critically with AI #ff2025

A light-skinned Black woman is just visible behind a podium on a stage. Her slides ask:

How do we describe archives?
Why do we describe archives?
What are we trying to automate?

I loved @jasonclark.bsky.social 's #FF2025 'problem statement':

'We were given access to a weirdly confident intern that can’t explain how they got their answers.

It is a seamless interface that breaks search interaction + retrieval patterns.'

What would be some of the concrete and *realistic* terms/features of “responsible AI” practices in your opinion (not of the pie-in-the-sky type)? I would love to hear from folks at #FF2025 if you have thoughts on this topic. Thank you!
