Maharashtra to use AI to boost freshwater fisheries output; ₹1,024-crore scheme launched The Maharashtra government plans to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance freshwater fish production in the state, Fisheries Development Minister Nitesh Rane said while replying to the discussion on budgetary demands in the Legislative Assembly on Friday. The initiative will focus on mapping water bodies, collecting accurate production data and improving pond management to raise fish yields. The government has begun compiling data on ponds across the State using AI tools in collaboration with technology firm Marvel, the Minister said. According to Rane, a large number of ponds, particularly in Vidarbha and Marathwada, have been allotted to various institutions for the past 30- 40 years, but reliable information on their actual fish production remains limited. The AI-based mapping exercise aims to generate detailed data on these water bodies and assess their production potential. “Once accurate data on the ponds and production levels is available, the government will engage with the institutions and pond operators concerned and extend the necessary support to increase fish output,” the minister said. Structural Issues The government is also focusing on improving the productivity of existing water bodies by addressing structural issues such as silt accumulation. Rane said that desilting of ponds alone could lead...

Upwelling Fueled Productive West Coast Ocean, Holding Warm Waters Offshore in 2025 - NOAA Fisheries (.gov) A massive marine heatwave warmed the eastern Pacific Ocean through much of 2025, but the wind-driven upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water that drives the rich marine productivity of the West Coast kept the ecosystem healthy. That is the conclusion of the California Current Ecosystem Status Report, an annual assessment of the West Coast marine ecosystem by NOAA’s California Current Integrated Ecosystem Assessment team. The report provides ecological insight for the Pacific Fishery Management Council and others on the ecological, social, and economic factors likely to influence fisheries and other ocean uses in the coming year. The report assesses conditions and trends over the last year for insight on coming seasons. The leading takeaways from the annual report include: Strong upwelling fostered productive waters and held heatwave warmth offshore Deep-water nutrients likely fostered toxic algae as it mixed with warm surface water Juvenile salmon, young rockfish and anchovy flourished in productive conditions Shrimp-like krill, which often reflect the health of the ecosystem, proved abundant coastwide Precipitation on land reduced drought conditions but sparse snowpack reduced water storage Four coastal fish processors closed as total coastwide landings remain low This year’s report also highlights new technology, ocean forecasts, and collaborations with vessel...

Cold Water Signals Along West Coast Could Help Assess Whale Entanglement Risk - NOAA Fisheries (.gov) NOAA Fisheries scientists have found telltale changes in cool, highly productive water upwelling along the West Coast. These changes can provide “an early warning system” signaling greater risk of humpback whales getting entangled in fishing gear. The wind-driven upwelling of cold, deep-ocean water fuels the West Coast’s rich coastal ecosystem. It attracts marine life to the cool corridor where the nutrient-rich water rises along the coast. The problem is that whales drawn to plentiful prey become entangled at high rates in gear from commercial fisheries attracted to the same productive waters. Scientists found that entanglements increase especially when the cool water corridor shrinks in what they call “habitat compression.” This draws the whales into even closer proximity to fishing gear with lines to the surface. California and other West Coast states have restricted lucrative fisheries for Dungeness crab in recent years to avoid entangling protected whales. NOAA Fisheries and others are also exploring new fishing technologies that could reduce entanglement risk. Earlier research in 2023 found that changes in the cool waters could forecast marine conditions that increase risk of whale entanglements up to 6–12 months in advance. NOAA Fisheries and NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory produced draft forecasts based on...

Illustrated Orange Roughy as letterhead

From the depths of the Orange Roughy Campaign

Statement

The Orange Roughy campaign o-fish-ally welcomes Jono Ridler to the Fish of
the Year race. While his entry is... unconventional, we believe his presence
brings vital attention to the devastating impacts of bottom trawling, a cause we
hold very deep in our hearts.

However, we have a few key observations:

* Classification: While we admire Mr. Ridler's endurance, the science is
clear: he is a mammal, not a fish. If the criteria for "Fish of the Year" now
includes those with lungs and a penchant for milk, the goalposts have
shifted significantly.

* A Level Playing Field: If mammals are now eligible, it is only fair to extend
an immediate invitation to Mr. Ridler's cousins, the whales and dolphins.
They have before been excluded based on their mammalian classification;
fairness dictates they be allowed to dive into the ballot.

* The Anti-Trawling Voting Bloc: Specifically, the Hector’s and Maui
dolphins would deserve a seat at the table. Like us, they are frequent
victims of bottom trawling nets and would be powerful allies in a visible and
growing voting bloc dedicated to protecting our oceans.

We welcome healthy competition and conversation. May the best candidate win.

Sincerely,

Team Orange Roughy

How NOAA Supports Abundant Fisheries What do a school of cod in the Gulf of Maine, a humpback whale migrating down the West Coast and a coastal wetland along the Gulf Coast have in common? NOAA Fisheries, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), conserves and manages these and many other ocean resources. NOAA Fisheries—also called the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS)–is critically important for a healthy ocean and sustainable fisheries and provides services the American public relies on. NOAA Fisheries has a big mission: It is responsible for the stewardship of our nation’s ocean resources and their habitats. NOAA Fisheries is a model for marine resource management around the world. Here are just some of the services that NOAA Fisheries delivers: Keeping Fishing Sustainable Effectively managing fisheries is what allows us to fish now and still conserve fish stocks and marine ecosystems for the future. NOAA Fisheries manages commercial and recreational fisheries in federal waters and plays a key role in management at the international and state levels. Sustainable management includes keeping catch within science-based catch limits, ending overfishing, rebuilding overfished stocks and preventing bycatch. While there is still room for improvement, NOAA Fisheries and its partners have rebuilt 52 fish stocks...

North Atlantic Right Whale: Conservation & Management - NOAA Fisheries (.gov) About the Species A right whale breaches. Credit: NOAA Fisheries The North Atlantic right whale is one of the world’s most endangered large whale species. Two other species of right whales exist: the North Pacific right whale, which is found in the North Pacific Ocean, and the Southern right whale, which is found in the southern hemisphere. Right whales are baleen whales, feeding on copepods (tiny crustaceans) by straining huge volumes of ocean water through their baleen plates, which act like a sieve. By the early 1890s, commercial whalers had hunted North Atlantic right whales to the brink of extinction. (They got their name from being the "right" whales to hunt because they floated when they were killed.) Whaling is no longer a threat, but they have never recovered to pre-whaling numbers, and human interactions still present a danger to this species. Entanglement in fishing gear and vessel strikes are the leading causes of North Atlantic right whale mortality. Increasing ocean noise levels from human activities are also a concern because the noise may interfere with right whale communication and increase their stress levels. NOAA Fisheries and our partners are dedicated to recovering the North Atlantic right whale population and...
