From the linked article: Thomas Jefferson, no fan of the press himself, once wrote that our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, "and that cannot be limited without being lost." He knew a free and fair press is an essential safeguard to a functioning democracy.

I've often disagreed with NPR's policy of bowing to the fascists demands, and toeing the line of right-wing propaganda, but this piece is worth reading.
