Louisiana Power Disruption Highlights Regional Vulnerabilities and Communication Concerns
A widespread power disruption recently impacted several Louisiana parishes, including Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard, along with Cleco customers. While power has been largely restored, the event underscores vulnerabilities within the regional power infrastructure and has prompted questions regarding communication protocols and transparency. The outages, which occurred on Memorial Day, May 27, 2025, were initiated by MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator), a regional transmission organization tasked with ensuring the stability of the power grid across multiple states. MISO issued a “load-shed order,” directing Entergy, the primary power provider, to strategically reduce power delivery to specific areas to avert a larger and potentially more devastating grid failure. Approximately 52,000 customers were directly affected by this controlled outage, with over 100,000 people experiencing power loss across areas like Mid-City, Lakeview, and parts of Metairie and Terrytown. Following MISO’s directive, Entergy implemented the load-shed plan and is currently focused on restoring power swiftly and safely while providing customers with updates. Several city officials, including JP Morrell, Helena Moreno, and Davante Lewis, have voiced concerns regarding the lack of advance notification provided to both the utility and regulatory bodies, expressing the belief that New Orleans experienced a disproportionate share of the disruption. Investigations are underway to determine the root causes of the outage and the reasons for its significant impact on New Orleans.
