Transferring Groo into Genndy Tartakovsky's style was a bit of an easy endeavor for me with making the character look as though he stepped out of Aku's twisted future. But, in order for me to encapsulate that approach, I had to look through some of Sergio Aragonés's works from Mad and various character designs from the works of Hanna-Barbera. The one thing to remember about Samurai Jack's world aside from the Eastern influence is also the Western abstract influence from various cartoons from UPA, H-B, and other collaborative efforts with Craig McCraken. I got it just as much as I could with the cel shading lineless style combining with a few bright colors for an added measure.
This was just such a fun exercise to pull off along with seeing how much both styles sure differentiated from one another. Plus, this was definitely a great testament to how much I was able to capture both so well. How fitting it is that Mad Magazine was one of my main influences towards my desire to hone my art style into a wider range that I tested it out with one of their top collaborators. Looking at this now, it does sort of make me think about the infamous Mickey Mouse and Oswald The Lucky Rabbit tease illustrated back in the '30s.
Doing Jack in Sergio Aragonés's proved to be a bit of a challenging feat for me given how loose his style is. Plus, I couldn't figure out what iteration of Groo to go by aesthetically, which left me to choose either between the Marvel Epic print or Dark Horse Comics variations. That and I could never really figure out what sort of print color to go with, which led partially to my choice of keeping it black and white. Figured that it would work given some of the black and white Sergio's Actions Speaks strips often used. Just four shits and giggles, I might return back to this one with everything I've learned throughout my time of retro editing through Photoshop.
An old piece for Sergio Aragones's birthday in homage to his years of mirth and MADness from 2022. Plus, it was a good opportunity for me to experiment with style switching.
