The Daily Heller: Paint, Critique and Paste David Becker is a sniper. He paints pictures and snipes posters on the streets. His latest project is _American Headbag_ , a series of meditations on the American flag, originally created as an installation of a dozen 60″ x 48″ works on paper, each slightly different and unique, all becoming darker and ending as an image of jail bars. Becker’s posters, primarily found in the Chelsea and Tribeca districts of Manhattan, riff on the headbag synonymous with overseas military abuse of enemies in U.S. custody. It’s a reminder that it can (and probably does) happen here, too. The posters were installed throughout New York as a campaign of passive resistance in October. We talked about the motivations for and expectations of embedding this image in the public discourse. **What motivated you to make your paintings into posters to disseminate throughout New York?** I was motivated by the current political situation. We are in an extraordinary time. I think we (Americans) are in a moment very similar to the end of the Civil War. It’s a dangerous time in which we’re seeing racial profiling, financial inequity, religious, and a general disdain for the rule of law at the highest levels. We’re experiencing an oligarchy. As an artist I felt that I needed to try and bring my talents to bear, to be part of the conversation, and encourage others to be engaged in questioning and resisting what we’re seeing. **Have you previously done much poster making (and particularly of a political nature)?** While in the ’70s in school in San Francisco I was part of a group of three artists, The San Francisco Poster Brigade, that churned out political posters, which we would show or post wherever we could. So, there is some history. More recently, work of a political nature has been taking place in my sketchbooks and making its way to social media via Instagram. **What are you saying to passersby?** I’m saying, this is you. It’s hard to see when you are inside. The headbag, or “hood,” in prison parlance, is a device for control. And, metaphorically, control seems to be all that the current administration is interested in. That and their own self-interested agenda. What better way to achieve that than wrapping it up in the most potent symbol of the USA. It’s no accident that the “MAGAs” have draped themselves in the red, white and blue in order to hoodwink the population. That’s all of us in there. It’s an ominous use of the American flag, and it’s an ominous moment. We all know it. For many of us it’s not easy to get involved. But it’s worth it. Support your local political candidates, speak your mind. That’s where change starts. **You’ve posted them primarily in Chelsea. Do you plan on reaching out beyond the art district?** Yes, resources permitting. Stay tuned. Photos: Mirko Ilic **I haven’t seen the condition of the barrage since you posted them. How have they fared in a city that discourages unlawful sniping?** About 50/50. Some were covered within a day or two, others partially torn, and some remarkably untouched. Some were carefully cut and torn out, which made me wonder if maybe they might be collected and saved. **Are you working on more posters?** Yes, both for exterior installs like what was just done, as well as other formats—from galleries to billboards, etc. Other designs are also in the works.
