Tuition fees are getting higher and higher, canteen prices are rising, shared flat costs are higher than ever, and our wallets are getting emptier and emptier. Being a student has always been expensive, but we can see that studying is becoming increasingly difficult for most young people to afford. This is partly due to the general rise in the cost of living, but it is particularly exacerbated by the fact that the state is massively cutting back on funding for education. The Berlin Senate wants to cut €142 million, which is approximately 10% of the budget for Berlin's universities. This will result in the loss of funds for urgently needed construction and renovation measures, for example, and seminars, tutorials and, in some cases, entire professorships will be cancelled, and an estimated 20,000 university places will be lost. The fact that less money is flowing into educational institutions such as universities is therefore having a concrete impact: Not only will the quality of education decline, but it will also become increasingly inaccessible to the general population. This fits in seamlessly with the social cuts currently being implemented by the German state, which is making financial cuts in the most important social areas.
