Why use ALT text?
Officially, ALT text is to describe the image for the sake of vision-impaired people using screen readers, who cannot see the image for themselves.
The basic guideline for how to write ALT text: “imagine you’re describing the image to some one you’re on the phone with”.
But that’s not the only reason to use ALT text! ALT text is also great for:
• people for whom images aren't loading right now (happens more often than people w/good connections realize)
• adding more searchable info than fits in the 300-character main post
• when your image is a picture of text:
• now the text can be quoted/copied/pasted
• readable when when [in very small font]font size is too small[back to regular] for some people
• readable when [in light blue on gray]colors are unreadable[back to regular] for some
• IDing people, animals, places, memes. Not everyone may recognize that actress, politician, bird, anime character the way you do, give them a little info so they’re part of the conversation
• telling a whole little story to go with the image, one you don’t feel like making into a series of posts. Just as a game for yourself, and a treat for people who click on the ALT tag. (see posts by @greenleejw.bsky.social the Surprised Eel Historian, for examples)

Feel free to copy and use this image, but ONLY if you include this ALT text!
I want more people to use ALT text. Here's a first draft of an explainer I want to paste as a reply to people who ask "why should I?". Please make suggestions/edits/comments! #alttext #accessibility #disability #imageposting
