I lost two of my favorite art books and couldn't find them no matter how hard I looked in my room, so I had no choice but to buy them online. 🥲 One book by Ingres and another book featuring paintings of angels from around the world. The two books cost about $19.

From Back Flip, a novel (2002), p.23: "There was a letter for her: a pale blue, nearly square airmail G. Lalo envelope with a Paris postmark. The big one-franc stamp on it was also squarish: a two-colour reproduction of an Ingres bather, seen from the rear. The model’s spine was so sinuous that she seemed to be cowering. One of her arms covered the nipple of her exposed breast but left its peachlike roundness visible. A striped turban like a knotted dishtowel clung precariously to the back of her head as she turned to look, not quite at the viewer, but somewhere off to the side with an expression that combined sadness and apprehension. Though that could just have been the effect of the wavy postmark across her forehead. Jane stuffed the letter into her purse and started up the stairs."

...and here's another nice RF stamp, from 1968.
(I wrote about this one in my novel Back Flip; see ALT text.)

The Princess de Broglie was married to the Prime Minister of France, Albert de Broglie. Ingres painted her portrait when she was 28. The Princess was praised for her beauty and elegance. Ingres, the Neoclassical artist in high demand for his portraits, painted Pauline in a beautifully crisp, bright blue silk ball gown with lace details; her ivory-colored wrap with gold embroidery lays atop a yellow damask chair. The portrait was commissioned by Pauline’s husband and, alas, it had a sad ending: shortly after Ingres finished the painting, Pauline became ill with tuberculosis and she died at age 35, leaving a grieving husband and five sons. Her husband kept a mourning cloth covering the portrait on the wall of his home for the rest of his life.

This image presents three portraits spanning distinct artistic styles and time periods, each depicting a seated figure with a strong, grounded presence. On the left is Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ Portrait of Monsieur Bertin (1832), a neoclassical rendering of a stern, white-haired man seated confidently in a wooden chair, his direct gaze and posture radiating authority. In the center is Pablo Picasso’s Portrait of Gertrude Stein (1905–06), painted in his early modernist style with simplified shapes and a mask-like face, portraying the writer seated with hands resting on her lap, exuding thoughtfulness and poise. On the right is Félix Vallotton’s Portrait of Gertrude Stein (1907), showing Stein in a voluminous brown garment and a long beaded necklace, sitting against a plain, angular backdrop; her steady gaze and solid form reflect Vallotton’s characteristic simplicity and psychological depth.

Ingres, Portrait of Monsieur Bertin (1832) + Picasso, Gertrude Stein (1905–06) + Vallotton, Gertrude Stein (1907)

Both portraits of Gertrude Stein have been (somewhat rudely) compared to Ingres’ picture

Jean-Auguste-Dominique #Ingres was born #OnThisDay in 1780, simultaneously ultra-conservative in his approach to #art & yet quite radical in anticipating later developments in modern art; this in his exquisite portrait of Mademoiselle Rivière (1805)
