These guys are VERY small and becoming endangered due to habitat loss from rising seas and forced close contact with humans.

Digital sketch study of a Florida Key Deer, Adult Male Key deer stand only about 30 inches tall at the shoulder while females are 26inches tall, making them the smallest subspecies of white tailed deer in North America. Once reduced to just a few dozen individuals, the species rebounded thanks to federal protection and the creation of the National Key Deer Refuge.

One of 5 Key Deer I saw during my visit to the Florida Keys. This small subspecies of the White-tailed Deer is threatened by habitat loss and collisions with cars. About the size of a Golden Retriever, and are adorable. #keydeer #odocoileusvirginianusclavium #mammals #wildlife #floridakeys

Drive to delist Florida’s diminutive Key deer was pushed by feds’ wacky ‘WIG’ plan • Florida Phoenix Have you ever seen a Key deer? They’re like a regular white-tail deer but scaled down to the size of a big dog. It’s as if someone crossed Bambi with Marmaduke. I saw one for the first time in 2017 while driving through the Keys. This was a few months after Hurricane Irma plowed through […]

How do you “conserve” species by booting them off the endangered list, kicking them down the protection ladder to “threatened,” or never letting them on the list in the first place? #Florida #environment #keydeer
