The tiny Key Deer are an endangered sub-species of white-tailed deer. A large adult only reaches 30 inches (76 cm) at the shoulder. There are only about 700 left, living in the Middle Keys centered around Big Pine Key in Florida. Saw 2 today in the National Key Deer Refuge.

Key deer were once poached almost to extinction and in 1967 were put on the endangered species list, where they remain today. The population has somewhat stabilized, with an estimated 700 to 800 individuals currently thriving in the Lower Keys. The threat of extinction continues.
