Without thinking, Riku reaches for the shadows in the ground, using them as shortcut to slip back to Sora’s side just in time to parry the volley of burning white energy beams shooting appearing out of nothingness. “Stay close,” he snaps at Sora, Soul Eater raised in guard stance. “We are easy pickings otherwise, and who’s gonna protect Kairi then?” “Hey, we still got–” Sora starts, sounding like he’s either voicing a complaint or cracking a joke and not quite yet sure which direction to go himself. Riku doesn’t find out how the sentence ends, only grunts when he’s suddenly pushed aside, only sees Sora’s mess of a haircut from the corner of his eye before his best friend is sent flying with a yell. “Sora,” Riku shouts and wants to turn and see if his friend is all right – but another crack of energy vibrates through the air, as white and black tendrils that are neither light nor darkness twist around him, catching him in place. He can feel them sap at his health, keeping him trapped just like before when Ansem, when Xehanort– “Calm your Heart,” Terra’s voice whispers in his ear, quiet and sure and somehow coming from within himself, Riku thinks, which is–

Sora shakes his head sharply, dismissing those weird lingering thoughts. “It shouldn’t be a problem now, right?” he says instead, twirling the Kingdom Key easily. “Just leave it to me! I got loads of experience sealing up those Keyholes by now!” “Stay alert,” Terra tells them,”I don’t think this one will go quietly.” Sora feels a flare of annoyance in his chest at his words – how is this ghost-guy talking like he hasn’t he been closing half a dozen Keyholes already. Shouldn’t that prove that he’s got being the – or at least a – Keyblade Master down by now? “No worries,” he proclaims with a little enforced cheer as both of his hands close around the Kingdom Key and he thrusts it straight towards the Keyhole. “This will be over in a–” A flash of light envelopes them all before he can finish the sentence.

“How can you say that?” Kairi snaps back, feeling suddenly just out of her depth – there was something changed about Riku even before when they planned to leave the Islands, but now… does she even know him anymore? “How can you talk so casually about killing–”

Since I managed to sit down three times in the past week for writing, I figure I'm allowed a #wipwednesday. Still on that Kairi scene for Makings, but I think I'll be able to wrap that up the next time I sit down to write, so I might get to prepare something to post for start of the year! /o/ #khfic
“Stop that,” she tells Donald, who quacks with indignation as she brushes past him. “A Heartless that hasn’t attacked any of us yet, even though it could have… it has to be a really lazy bum… right, Sora?” She glances back at Riku, who looks just as stunned as he did just before their hug, trading glances between her and the Heartless. “Are you sure?” he asks, though he doesn’t actually seem to doubt her. Then his face falls as he summons his weapon, “Step back, Kairi.” “What?” she blinks then, deliberately steps before the Heartless. “No way, I won’t let you hurt him either!” What would be the point of stopping Donald otherwise?
“Then, what do you want to do?” Riku asks, hisses. “We can’t get him back from that. There’s no way to return a Heart once it’s fallen – I checked, when–” He cuts himself off at that, lips pressed together bitterly – whatever he checked must be related to the time she’s missing, but. “I’m not giving up on him,” she tells him, because even if it’s supposed to be impossible – Kairi is pretty sure what she did for Riku wasn’t supposed to be in the cards either. “Especially not when he’s right in front of us.” “There’s nothing to give up on; that thing isn’t Sora anymore, Kairi,” Riku argues as he steps up and glares right down at her, “Just what the Darkness spit out after taking his Heart. I spent most of the last six months reading myself through half the library here to figure out how to find and return a stolen Heart to a body, and we don’t even have that.”
That feel when fanfiction has you run into a conflict you hadn't anticipated to hit all of sudden. I'm actually not sure how to play this out yet, or if it will make it into the final chapter draft but it's kind of an intriguing situation. #KHfic #KingdomHearts #KH
