For some folks, combatting high cholesterol takes more—WAY more—than a diet change. Familial hypercholesterolemia is genetic and can cause heart attacks at incredibly young ages. Learn more about your risk (and how you can lower it) via support from @FamilyHeartFdn #knowFH
A10: A majority of #KnowFH is undiagnosed/ undertreated. Here’s what you can do:
1. Screen yourself & family members that may be at risk
2. Early & Aggressive treatment
3. Optimize ALL CV risk factors and optimize CH health per @American_Heart Life's Essential 8 metrics
A9: Options for lipid-lowering are ever-A9 expanding as summarized in the figure taken from (Lloyd-Jones, JACC, 2022). #KnowFH
A8: The @AmerAcadPeds recommends cholesterol screening between the ages of 9-11 years. Children with a family history of heart disease or #KnowFH should be screened at 2 years. Everyone should have a repeat cholesterol test between the ages of 17-21 years.
A7: Know your numbers! Get your cholesterol (lipid panel) checked and have your family members screened. 80% of ♥️ disease is preventable. Talk to a lipid specialist or preventive cardiologist to learn how you can lower your risk of ♥️ disease. #KnowFH

A6: Absolutely! Early detection & treatment is key to lowering ♥️ disease risk. In this study from @NEJM there is a difference in CV events & CV death among pts with #KnowFH who received statin therapy during childhood vs. affected parents among who started statins later in life.
A5: The diagnosis of HeFH and HoFH is clinical. Risk calculators i.e. Dutch Lipid Clinic Criteria, Simon Broome etc. can help make the dx. While FH is genetically inherited, genetic testing is not required, but can aid in the diagnosis and provide prognostic information. #KnowFH
A4: two notable physical exam findings are the presence of a corneal arcus and Achilles Tendon thickening. Examples below are taken from my presentation at @ACC 2021 #KnowFH @TheFHFoundation

⭐️People without ♥️ disease: LDL-C <100 mg/dL
⭐️People with♥️ disease (i.e. ♥️ attack or stroke): LDL-C <70 mg/dL
⭐️People at very high risk for ♥️ disease or those with #KnowFH: LDL-C <55 mg/dL

A2: It is well established that high LDL-C is causal for ♥️ disease and that lowering LDL-C can reduce the risk of ♥️ disease. Plasma LDL-C concentration is strongly associated with a dose-dependent increase in the risk of incident cardiac events (i.e. ♥️ attacks). #KnowFH
A1: Cholesterol comes from your liver and from your diet. The liver is the principal site in your body that makes cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol comes primarily from the consumption of animal products i.e. red meat, high fat dairy, egg yolks. #KnowFH
