Two Mosaic Records Box Sets purchased this week - Lester Young with Count Basie and The Savory Collection. The first is quite spooky at times - Lester’s tone weirdly seems to presage Coltrane’s for a phrase here and there. And what I’d give to be able to sing like Jimmy Rushing… The Savory Collection is a fascinating story - unique radio recordings made onto discs by an audio engineer jazz fan during the 1930s which were finally released by Mosaic after his death.
Give an #oldperson a week’s wages and he immediately looks on eBay to see if there are any #MosaicRecords #boxsets at below Discogs prices. If the OAP in question is me, at least. This week two that I’ve wanted for a while, #LesterYoung with #CountBasie and #TheSavoryCollection were quickly grabbed.

Easing into Monday with the good Count Basie. While I'm not a huge Basie-phile, I do appreciate him, especially this period of his career when he featured the great Lester Young on saxophone. Added bonus: Mr. 5by5, Jimmy Rushing is on vocals on several tunes here. Found this lovely condition mid-50s UK compilation at the flea market for a buc.

Somehow I didn't have a copy of this post-humous 1961 Lester Young collection of live recordings. Wonder if anyone ever figured out where these tracks came from (liner notes said they didn't know at the time)? Perfect condition copy from the bargyn bin, recent find. If you haven't, listen to Lester Young. Everyone should. Great grand-daddy of jazz saxophone players.
