Maru refused to accept that Aya was simply gone. Everyone else had moved on after the officials called it a ‘cosmic accident’. But Maru held on, searching message boards, watching late-night broadcasts about strange phenomena, and rereading their old conversations. Somewhere deep inside, she believed that if she kept looking long enough, she would find Aya again.
Two weeks after the day Aya vanished, Maru returned to her house.
The place felt wrong. The silence, the dust that had already begun to settle in thin gray layers. Maru climbed the narrow attic stairs, each step creaking under her weight. This was the last place anyone had seen Aya. If there were answers, they had to be here.
A single window let in a weak stripe of afternoon light. Maru knelt beside the mattress Aya had been using during her recent obsession with stargazing. She dragged it aside, sweeping away the dust and forgotten clutter beneath it. As she worked, something moved in the corner of her vision.
A bug.
Maru recoiled instinctively, her hand snapping forward to swat it. But the motion stopped halfway. The insect wasn’t skittering like a normal bug. It was… standing.
On two legs.
It raised its tiny arms and waved.
Maru’s blood ran cold.
Her heart hammered as she leaned closer, lowering herself to the floor until her face was inches away. The creature’s shape was wrong, almost familiar. The proportions, the posture, the frantic, unmistakable way it gestured.
Recognition hit her.
Her eyes widened as the impossible truth settled in.
The ‘bug’ wasn’t a bug at all.
It was Aya.
