For a long time, it was known there were PowerPC-compatible beta builds of OS X Snow Leopard, however, these builds remained seemingly elusive until 2020. Beta build 10A190 surfaced, was tested and reviewed by some, but was ultimately determined to not be usable as a stable, daily-drivable OS. Currently, there are multiple versions of Mac OS X Snow Leopard which can boot into PowerPC Macs.</p> <h3>Where it stands today</h3> <p>Fast forward to Fall 2024, a group of individuals over at MacRumors collaborated and produced a working, bootable copy of 10.6.8 for PowerPC with the kernel compiled from source. This is still currently in development, with the goal in mind to mirror as closely as possible the PowerPC 10.6.8 to the Intel 10.6.8. Currently, the “Alpha 3” build is a compilation of 10.6.8 at its core, combined with slices of Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Snow Leopard beta. <strong><em>(See Below for more)</em></strong></p> <h3>Build 10A96 (June 3rd, 2008)</h3> <p>Currently known as the earliest build of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and is the official Developer Preview. Those who attended WWDC ’08 were sent a DVD copy of 10A96. The notes claim PowerPC is an “unsupported configuration” despite being able to boot on PowerPC. <em>Source: <a href="https://betawiki.net/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Snow_Leopard_build_10A96">BetaWiki</a></em></p> <ul> <li>Has a copy BootCamp 3.0, in it’s early stages.</li> <li>Entourage 2007 support was added in a new-to-this-build Address Book.</li> <li>Crash reports: Automatic, now the default setting.</li> <li>Install DVD icons’ layout is off-kilter</li> <li>This build can only display video out at a monitor’s native resolution and cannot be changed.</li> <li>There is a 5-minute input delay on nonspecific high/higher end Intel machines, which doesn’t happen if you boot this build on PowerPC Macs.</li> </ul> <p><img alt="" class="wp-image-54034 aligncenter" decoding="async" fetchpriority="high" height="307" sizes="(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px" src="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/600px-Media-disc01-10a96-512x512.png" srcset="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/600px-Media-disc01-10a96-512x512.png 512w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/600px-Media-disc01-10a96-320x320.png 320w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/600px-Media-disc01-10a96-160x160.png 160w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/600px-Media-disc01-10a96.png 600w" width="307"/></p> <p><img alt="" class="size-large wp-image-54035 aligncenter" decoding="async" height="480" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" src="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_EULA-2021-11-28-13-16-37-640x480.png" srcset="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_EULA-2021-11-28-13-16-37-640x480.png 640w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_EULA-2021-11-28-13-16-37-320x240.png 320w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_EULA-2021-11-28-13-16-37-160x120.png 160w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_EULA-2021-11-28-13-16-37-768x576.png 768w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_EULA-2021-11-28-13-16-37.png 1024w" width="640"/></p> <p><img alt="" class="size-full wp-image-54036 aligncenter" decoding="async" height="367" loading="lazy" sizes="(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px" src="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_Kernel_Version-2021-11-29-18-35-33.png" srcset="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_Kernel_Version-2021-11-29-18-35-33.png 505w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_Kernel_Version-2021-11-29-18-35-33-320x233.png 320w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Mac_OS_X_10.6_10A96_Kernel_Version-2021-11-29-18-35-33-160x116.png 160w" width="505"/></p> <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Above: screenshots of 10A96 &amp; dev DVD. This version has known issues, and requires further development to be a totally useable, daily-drivable OS. It is currently available for download from MacRumors and Macintosh Garden.</p> <p>Note: This is a completely <strong><em>real </em></strong>build of Mac OS X 10.6.8 for PowerPC, as the core Kernel Darwin 10.8.0 is compiled directly from source, for PowerPC. “Slices” of other Mac OS X builds were used in this, but this is <em>truly</em> 10.6.8 at its core. Slices used: Snow Leopard Developer builds, 10.6.0 – 10.6.8, and some from 10.5.8.</p> <p><img alt="" class="wp-image-54043 aligncenter" decoding="async" height="407" loading="lazy" sizes="(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px" src="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-10-2-24-9.15.32-PM.png" srcset="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-10-2-24-9.15.32-PM.png 1920w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-10-2-24-9.15.32-PM-320x180.png 320w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-10-2-24-9.15.32-PM-640x360.png 640w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-10-2-24-9.15.32-PM-160x90.png 160w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-10-2-24-9.15.32-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-10-2-24-9.15.32-PM-1536x864.png 1536w" width="724"/><img alt="" class="wp-image-54046 aligncenter" decoding="async" height="407" loading="lazy" sizes="(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px" src="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/1728262129515.png" srcset="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/1728262129515.png 1920w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/1728262129515-320x180.png 320w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/1728262129515-640x360.png 640w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/1728262129515-160x90.png 160w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/1728262129515-768x432.png 768w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/1728262129515-1536x864.png 1536w" width="724"/><img alt="" class="wp-image-54047 aligncenter" decoding="async" height="482" loading="lazy" sizes="(max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px" src="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-11-27-24-6.34.33-AM.png" srcset="https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-11-27-24-6.34.33-AM.png 1280w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-11-27-24-6.34.33-AM-320x214.png 320w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-11-27-24-6.34.33-AM-640x427.png 640w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-11-27-24-6.34.33-AM-160x107.png 160w, https://lowendmac.com/wp-content/uploads/Screenshot-11-27-24-6.34.33-AM-768x512.png 768w" width="723"/></p> <h4>Partial list of Known Issues (10K549 PPC):</h4> <ul> <li>Bluetooth won’t find devices, Eth/Wifi has a self-assigned IP (cannot be changed), Finder CoverFlow frozen/glitchy, Spotlight indexing doesn’t work.</li> <li>Some machines will randomly lose their Video-Out signal, seemingly only the Power Mac G5. If I'm going to make this thing fly, I'm going to do it right, with the right hardware and the right software too.

And yes, it seems the old Windows 98 partitions are recognized.
