Decided to try my hand at crochet yesterday and spent 2.5 hours trying to figure out how to do a magic loop after which my wife offered to start it for me. From there on it was 30 minutes of just figuring out how the stitched work before going full bore.

There are various knitting methods. For small projects like socks or baby sleeves, double pointed needles (dpns) or a long circular needle are useful. The magic loop technique, with a long circular needle is great for this type of project.
