The Insatiableness of Avarice.

Though the covetous grown wealthy
See his piles of gold rise high;
Though he gather store of treasure
That can never satisfy;
Though with pearls his gorget blazes,
Rarest that the ocean yields;
Though a hundred head of oxen
Travail in his ample fields;
Ne'er shall carking care forsake him
While he draws this vital breath,
And his riches go not with him,
When his eyes are closed in death.

-Boethius, 524 CE

The people asked for a poem written by #Boethius, so I will provide a poem by Boethius. If you want to hear me read this, then check out this week's #TheMathematiciansPodcast for an episode of philosophy, theology and maths.

Teaching myself maths since my 1st suicide attempt was literally coz of failing in maths class, starting with '''easy''' year 7 stuff. Why is the first unit almost all unknown things 😭😭

I'm mathematically illiterate but maybe in like 12 years I'll be Average 😁😁

I really enjoyed hearing Adam Spencer discuss all things GenAI today at Monash Uni. Through Adam's plenary I also learnt how 2025 is a very satisfying year in maths terms: 2025 = (20+25)^2 - how cool is that! #nerdsunite #mathssky #sciencesky

Maths as a university option for students with a range of A-level grades
University mathematics varies wildly. Are there degrees suitable for students with B/C/D grades at A-level? At Sheffield Hallam University, we see grades ranging from A to D, and only around a quarter with some Further Maths. We have a strong record of students with lower grades achieving top degree outcomes and developing into excellent graduates with worthwhile careers in mathematical occupations.
This workshop offers A-level teachers chance to try out first year curriculum topics, learn how students who don't get top grades get on with degree maths, and hear about careers taken up by graduates.

Aimed at A level Maths teachers wanting to know about university options, esp. for students without A grades. What do students learn? What careers do they do?

Fun stats trick: you can quickly estimate the median of some distribution just by drawing 5 random samples.

There's a >90% chance that the median is between the highest and lowest values of the drawn samples

The 2025 Game: arrange the digits 2, 0, 2 and 5 with symbols in between (e.g. +, -, ×, ÷, ^, !, etc.) to make the numbers 0-10. For example, 2+0+2+5=9. How many can you make?

(I just confirmed all numbers 0-10 are possible.)

Take the binary representation of 1/√2, but then interpret the digits (still all 1s and 0s) in base-3. Clearly this number is also irrational. But is it expressible in some kind of closed form?

Grigori Perelman - Wikipedia

Stumbled upon the Wikipedia article of Grigori Perelman who has achieved many many outrageously clever things, but perhaps most charmingly declined an interview in 2021 by saying

"You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms."
