Empire self censored the first Russell Crowe interview. They certainly would have published it even ten years before and also meant they missed a trick when the BAFTA incident occured. #empireread #may2002

โ€œSave Meโ€: Trauma, Vindication, and the Uncritical Gaze of May (2002) Lucky McKeeโ€™s May (2002) presents itself as a horror-tinged character study, but it ultimately delivers neither psychological clarity nor moral insight. Instead, it flirts with empathy before withdโ€ฆ

Angela Bettis plays a woman unraveling in May (2002), a film that poses as a character study but dodges psychological truth in favor of blood-soaked fantasy.

May Canady, sat on her knees. Her left eye cries blood, and she wipes it with the palm of her left hand while clutching Susie, her doll, with her right. She is wearing a sleeveless dress with flowers on it, now stained with smudges of blood, and a watch on her left wrist. The floor is covered in shattered glass. The background is filled with lyrics from Candy Says by The Velvet Underground. It reads "Candy says... I've come to hate my body... and all that it requires in this world..."

Watched one of the #May #May2002 commentary tracks, and @luckymckee.bsky.social mentioned that they'd originally cut the show and tell scene to Candy Says by #TheVelvetUnderground, so I replayed the scene on mute with this song over it and, needless to say, it kicked my ass.

Fan art for May (2002). Various body parts hang from a clothes line up above. Below it is May, curled into a ball, heartbroken, holding scissors and a cigarette, covered in blood, and a dead cat. The text reads "So many pretty parts, and no pretty wholes."

One of my favorite Instagram moments was when I posted #FanArt for #May #May2002 and got a comment that said, "Instead of improving, you draw mentally deranged stuff like this." It's been my motto ever since. @luckymckee.bsky.social
