Unity announce expanded supported for Steam, Native Linux, Steam Deck and Steam Machine For GDC 2026, Unity revealed expanded official support is coming for Steam. This includes Native Linux, Steam Deck, Steam Machine and more. To save you from having to watch through the video, I grabbed a coffee and noted down what they said. Directly from James Stone, Unity Platforms Team, here's what they said: > One thing I can talk about now is that we're bringing official Steam support into Unity. Now, I know you'll say "But I already ship games to Steam" and that's true. Thousands of developers have had success on Steam with Unity. The thing is, prior to Platform Toolkit, we've never actually officially supported Steam in the past. It's always been up to developers to integrate Steamworks themselves, and publish and support their titles on that platform historically. > > And on Steam Deck, many of you have been finding success with Proton. But I think we can do better with a native solution. So, as I mentioned before our strength is highly performant native runtimes. So moving forward we'll provide not just build targets for Steam but also Steam Deck and the upcoming Steam Machine. We'll also look to make targeted enhancements to our Linux runtime to provide native performance increases and remove the need for developers to rely on Windows through Proton. > > And look, as great as Proton is, it's simply something we don't have any degree of control over or ability to support. And we've actually made some native improvements to the Linux player that targets the Steam Deck hardware. Offering a potential improvement in performance over a build running on Proton and that's actually available today. You can watch their full video below the Steam part starts around 40:11: YouTube videos require cookies, you must accept their cookies to view. View cookie preferences. Accept Cookies & Show Direct Link What do you make of this news? Quite exciting to see such expanded Linux support coming. Good news for developers too. Looks like Native Linux is back on the menu - at least for developers using Unity. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

CachyOS update brings improvements for PC gaming handhelds, the installer and more CachyOS continues being one of the most popular Linux distributions, and the brand new release comes with lots of welcome improvements to setting it up. Should be smoother, and easier to install it while looking pretty slick too. What actually is CachyOS? They say it's a "fully optimized Arch Linux desktop with CPU-specific package builds, a tuned kernel, and your choice of desktop environment. Browse, develop, create, and game on a system built for speed — powered entirely by free and open-source software". As of the most recent Steam Survey it was third in the list of popular Linux distros. The refreshed installer looks good, giving you video previews of the different desktop options, along with some other behind the scenes improvements to make it work better overall. I think I'm really going to have to give CachyOS a proper go soon to see what all the fuss is about, but I don't want to break my current Fedora KDE install which has been running smoothly for quite some time now. But the distro-hop feeling is getting stronger over here. Let me know how you're getting on with CachyOS in the comments. Convince me! All the changes are listed below: > **Features:** > > * **Installer:** > * Added support to show GIF/WebP videos in the Desktop Selection to showcase the desktops. This is enabled for Plasma, GNOME, Niri and COSMIC > * Added support for JPEG XL in the Desktop Selection to reduce image sizes > * Cachy-Update is now enabled by default for the GNOME and KDE installations > * Improved microcode installation logic — it will now detect the hardware and install the proper microcode instead of installing both and then removing the unneeded one > * Improved error message when the EFI partition is too small > * Sorted the Desktop Environment list from easy and accessible setups to more advanced ones like WMs > * **CachyOS-Welcome:** > * Added a button to easily install and enable “Winboat” for an easy Windows Docker VM > * Added support for FFMUC DNS server in DNS selection > * Added Ukrainian translation > * **chwd:** Decreased the initramfs size massively for NVIDIA dGPU configurations > * **linux-cachyos:** Instead of generating a `0001-cachyos-base-all.patch`, a release is now generated in a Linux repository for each release of our patched kernel > * **cachyos-rate-mirrors:** Improved the experience for users in China&Russia massively with a proper check before rating the mirrors > * **cachyos-settings:** Added support to automatically set the wireless regulatory domain based on timezone > * **website:** The website design has been reworked and improved to follow more modern standards > * **GitHub:** Added issue templates to important GitHub repos to improve the quality of bug reports and provide guidance for the user > * **Mirrors:** New mirrors in Russia (jura12, cachy-arch.ru), Sweden (Zyner), and Canada (All Things Linux) > > > **Fixes:** > > * **Installer:** > * Removed support for bcachefs in the filesystem selection due to the requirement of bcachefs-dkms > * Fixed encryption when LUKS2 is used for specific devices > * Fixed enabling the “ly” display manager > * **cachyos-settings:** `cachyos-bugreport.sh` now redacts IP, username, hostname, and MAC address > * **chwd:** > * Generic handheld profiles and improved support for handheld GPUs > * fwupd is now enabled for Lenovo handhelds > > > **Changelog for Handheld Edition:** > > * **gamescope-session:** Replaced gamescope-session-plus with gamescope-session-cachyos, which is forked from Valve’s gamescope-session > * Enables firmware updates for Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go devices > * **plasma-login-manager:** Replaced SDDM with plasma-login-manager for the login manager > * **bootloaders:** Limine is now selected as default with automatic snapshots. systemd-boot will still be selectable > * **Installer:** Merged Handheld Calamares with desktop edition calamares together > * **ISO:** ISO now uses Wayland instead of X11. > See the CachyOS website for more. Linux Mint Cinnamon has the new screensaver lock screen ready for Wayland The Linux Mint team have a new blog post up detailing their new screensaver, which is the last major point for full Wayland support with the Cinnamon desktop. Originally, there was a dedicated screensaver program which ran as a separate process. That didn't work with Wayland, and the transition between screensaver and desktop wasn't very smooth. It was also really complex to maintain. So with the new one it's built with Cinnamon itself handling it - so everything is modern and smooth. Pictured - the upcoming screensaver lock screen Sounds like some of it was quite complex, and they touch on an issue I've seen with other screensavers / lock screens on other desktop environments where the desktop will briefly flash before showing the lock screen. As they note, it's a bit of a privacy issue and just doesn't look good. Thankfully, that is solved with the new one too. Their current plan is for the next Linux Mint release to use it, but have the old one as a backup and the release after will remove the old one. Right now though, the Mint team still don't seem entirely sold on setting Wayland as the default just yet but the next Cinnamon release will have full compatibility. Additionally, the newer System Reports tool also gained a page dedicated to system sensors. Which they say can be useful for fan speed and temperatures, along with troubleshooting power modes, battery lifetime and so on. Read the full post for more. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Ubuntu and Fedora devs comment on California's new Digital Age Assurance Act With California's new age checking law coming into action in January 2027, there's a lot of discussion on how Linux distributions will be handling it. California are also not the only ones going for it, as it appears Colorado will also be doing a similar thing but that's coming while later - and we can expect more to follow. A post on the Ubuntu developer mailing list has sparked numerous discussions online, with Canonical's VP of Engineering Jon Seager officially replying on the Ubuntu Discourse forum to note: > Over the past couple of days, there has been a lot of commentary about Ubuntu and how it’ll respond to California’s new Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043), which will require operating systems to collect age information at account setup and expose an age “signal” to eligible applications from 2027. > > Canonical is aware of the legislation and is reviewing it internally with legal counsel, but there are currently no concrete plans on how, or even whether, Ubuntu will change in response. > > The recent mailing list post is an informal conversation among Ubuntu community members, not an announcement. While the discussion contains potentially useful ideas, none have been adopted or committed to by Canonical. > > When we have a clear plan, we will publish it through our usual channels. There's a similar post on the Fedora forum from Fedora Project Leader Jef Spaleta, where they initially noted they weren't actually aware of it. However, in a follow-up post they said: > I’m not sure it requires telemetry. > I’m now aware of a similar legislation in Colorado. > > I really don’t want to get over my skis and speculate too much. But I’m hopeful that the biggest impact for the entire ecosystem is that we figure out a way to have an OS local API that applications can choose to query.. and ask the OS what age bracket the current user is… and then the application is able to make UI/UX choices based on the OS provided information. > > I think the point is to not have to have all the applications have to figure out how to ask for age information individually. The point I think is to ensure age information can be part of OS account creation and applications can query the OS to determine which age bucket a user is in. No telemetry… just a way for applications to query the OS… a local API… sounds a lot like a dbus service to me. > > So what I am envisioning in my head is a family desktop computer… where the parents are the administrators.. and they create an account for their kid. When they create an account, the OS needs to have a way for them to optionally indicate the age bucket for the human associated with the account. Applications then could choose to query the OS concerning the age bucket and make UI/UX adjustments based on the age bucket info the OS returns. > > Again I’m still coming up to speed on these pieces of legislation, and I still need to have more discussions with people. What I think is being mandated by legislation is making sure OSes have a documented way for applications to query for the age bucket information for the user. Do not take that as binding understanding, that is my current understanding based on what I’m reading currently in terms of editorial interpretation of the legislation that I can find. There’s work to do here to get clarity on that. > > End of the day.. this might be a simple as extending how we currently map uid to usernames and group membership and having a new file in /etc/ that keeps up with age. It might be as simple as that and we extend the administrative cli and gui tools to populate that file as part of account creation. That might be simplest and it solves the problem for the full ecosystem of linux OSes. Then applications just have to start choosing to look at the file. Seems like it might end up quite messy for various Linux distributions. Especially for smaller distributions that don't have legal teams. We're in for some rough weather with so many new age-based regulations across different countries coming into force over the next few years. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

EA Javelin Anticheat job listing mentions future support for Linux and Proton One big issue with Linux / SteamOS gaming is a lack of anti-cheat support, and it seems Electronic Arts (EA) have future plans for supporting the platform. Currently, EA's own Javelin Anticheat does not support Linux platforms at all. As a result games like Battlefield, EA SPORTS FC and various others simply don't work. That may change in future though, especially with the rise of SteamOS / Steam Deck and the future Steam Machine. _Pictured - Battlefield 6_ A new EA job listing for a Senior Anti-Cheat Engineer notes that a lot of the focus is on bringing up support for ARM64 with Windows, but if you scroll down one of the responsibilities listed is: > Chart a path for EA Javelin Anticheat to support additional OS and hardware in the future, such as Linux and Proton. It goes to show how the industry is changing. Potentially good news for future multiplayer titles from EA. If Linux gaming is to be a long-term success, we need as many of these popular online games working as possible. And while GeForce NOW can be a good solution, it's not a good fit for everyone and costs extra. See the full job listing for all the details. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

California law to require operating systems to check your age The time of age assurance is upon us, and not just for social media - for operating systems too and that includes Linux as well of course. News currently doing the rounds is California law AB-1043 "Age verification signals: software applications and online services" that comes into effect January 1, 2027 that will require operating systems and app stores to get your age and be able to somehow signal that age to applications when they request it. From the bill: > This bill, beginning January 1, 2027, would require, among other things related to age verification with respect to software applications, an operating system provider, as defined, to provide an accessible interface at account setup that requires an account holder, as defined, to indicate the birth date, age, or both, of the user of that device for the purpose of providing a signal regarding the user’s age bracket to applications available in a covered application store and to provide a developer, as defined, who has requested a signal with respect to a particular user with a digital signal via a reasonably consistent real-time application programming interface regarding whether a user is in any of several age brackets, as prescribed. The bill would require a developer to request a signal with respect to a particular user from an operating system provider or a covered application store when the application is downloaded and launched. > > This bill would prohibit an operating system provider or a covered application store from using data collected from a third party in an anticompetitive manner, as specified. > > This bill would punish noncompliance with a civil penalty to be enforced by the Attorney General, as prescribed. > > This bill would declare its provisions to be severable. Reading through the bill details, it _doesn't_ seem to demand any ID scanning or anything like that. The text makes it pretty clear they want "nonpersonally identifiable data" taken from your birth date to have you placed into age brackets like under 13, under 16 or at least 18. This is very US / California specific of course but still applies worldwide to any operating system that has downloads available in California, and continues the trend we've seen elsewhere against social media platforms from various countries (like the unpopular changes with Discord). All in the name of _protecting children_. This in a way seems a _lot_ more invasive though, considering this age checking is now making its way into your PC directly. It starts with asking for your birth date, but how long before they want _more_ - and for other places to create similar laws? It's a slippery slope. What we may end up seeing is the likes of GNOME, KDE Plasma and other deskop environments just add in a simple date picker for your age on account creation, or some kind of statement on their downloads page on how it's _not_ to be used in California perhaps. It would be interesting to see how this type of law could go after Linux distributions if they don't have any age checking at all in place, especially since accounts already created before July 2027 will need to have something in place so you can go back and add your age.
