My mother was having a home built near Globe, AZ. She ordered a load of fill dirt for landscaping, and in that load of dirt were the pieces of this approximately 800 year old native bowl. She painstakingly glued the pieces, and asked me to paint it for her. She said it could be my first commission! I arranged the bowl on fabric my mother had in her sewing room, turquoise for the foundation and a deep beautiful red for the background. I went for a walk beneath the Superstition Mountains were I live, and picked out a cholla cactus, a desert willow beanpod, and a wildflower. I arranged them in my shadowbox, and took this reference photo for my mother's painting.

Took advantage of the break in the rainy weather streak yesterday to fire some earring cabs. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

And I was able to find all the pieces after the fire was finished! ๐Ÿ˜…

Art is political. My art lets you know that Caddos are still here and that our culture is worth preserving.

Thanks Rep. Ralph Norman for recognizing my work and the grant! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Iโ€™ve been experimenting with shapes and also seeing how thin I can get the clay I processed from Caddo Mounds. Iโ€™ve been able to get the cabs 2mm thin, making the earrings a little less heavy! โœจ

We finished the traditional Caddo pottery classes this week by firing our pots!

Over the last 13 months, we learned to hand dig clay, process it, shape it, and fire it. All in the same place our ancestors did before colonization.

I was inspired by water when choosing these bead colors. This pair is titled Kuukuh, which means water in Caddo. ๐Ÿ’™

These earrings are en route to the Craft Council of British Columbia! โœˆ๏ธ

The cabs are made of clay that I hand dug and processed in East TX (where my ancestors did before colonization). I fired the cabs in a traditional fire, which gives them unique colors. ๐Ÿ–ค
