One of my favorite mentoring experiences was teaching someone subdiv modeling who didn't even know what subdiv modeling was. In 2 months, she worked up to modeling incredibly complex things and all while learning how to use #ngons from day 1.
That's what happens when you don't limit your learning.
Looking at the area to the right of this, I saw room for improvement.
If I was doing this at work, I would 100% do this. It flows way better. #ngons
Hot take: Don't bother learning quad-only topo if you're just starting. Learn everything.
Avoiding #ngons doesn't make learning easier/faster, but it absolutely makes it harder in the long term. It's better to include it as an acceptable concept earlier on.
#Ngons are poly flow directors.
It makes me both sad and annoyed that students are taught to avoid #ngons. I don't mind that if you don't know how to teach advanced topics to encourage students to look into it on their own time.
But to teach ngons are wrong? That's irresponsible and destructive for their growth as artists.
4 subdivided planar surfaces joining in a quad-based intersection. This particular intersection would require removing key profile-defining loops in order to make into an ngon, so quads are the ideal and efficient solution.
3 subdivided planar surfaces joining in a ngon-based intersection. In this case, attempting to solve the ngon into a quad will require adding unnecessary loops and curvature adjustment for no advantage to the end result. In this case, ngons are the ideal and efficient solution.
Examples of quad and ngon multi-plane change intersections.
Both have their uses, depending on the minimum edge loops needed to retain the profile of the surrounding topo. Basically, no need to add more loops if you don't need to.
Quading the #ngons would require more loops and more time.
I put a lot of effort into deconstructing the roadblocks that prevent individuals from learning advanced topics or skills.
Sometimes, learning or grasping a new topic involves bringing down barriers that you or someone else put in place.

#Ngons are just neurodivergent polygons.
Often misunderstood, but more capable than most people give them credit for.
Could probably do this better with more time, but here's my 5 minute solution 😁 #ngons
Added cuts to the back of a weapon grip with edge flow that doesn't account for the new details. There is also some adjustment where I removed edges to accommodate the cuts.
The new cuts are then beveled and extruded inward.
The edge flow is then adjusted to conform to the new cuts, with a support loop in the inner cuts. Note the ngons around the ends of the cuts!
Subdivided result.
Destructive modeling is my bread and butter. Helps when you forget to add a detail and realize you didn't plan for it.
No big deal. Just brute force it! 💪 #topology #ngons
"No ngons on deforming areas". True for low poly, But can sometimes be fine in high poly.
Here's an example of a configuration of four 5-sided ngons and two 6-sided ngons. I also applied the animated deformer BEFORE the subdivision.
Shown without wires first and isolinear wires after. #ngons
#ngons are neat.
Bumping this thread again because #ngons
Base unsubdivided wireframe
Subdivided wires with the base wires shown in red.
Unsubdivided section of a practical use case on a production model.
Same section but smoothed
Try to keep in mind that the center of every ngon is a pole when subdivided. It makes it easier to visualize how each side will smooth.
#Ngons will allow you to use far less geo than you would normally need to achieve the same effect.
