A collaboration with my husband Ryan, who adores leeches. He designed the plate with the spoons (baby leeches), I built it from clay. We picked the glazes together. I am so in love. Leeches are surprisingly adorable once you get to know them. #leeches #SciArt #ceramics #handbuilding #NoVERMber

A Christmas Tree Worm. The bit of worm you can see are the two spiralled branchioles. They are orange and feathery with white inner colouring and black tips. The worm lives in a tube secreted on coral. The coral polyps are beige, small, and tightly packed.

Final day of #NoVERMber and Christmas is looming.
In festive cheer, meet the Christmas Tree Worms Spirobranchus spp.!

This worm started it all for me. I studied their ecology for my undergrad. And the rest is history...

I have just found out about #noVERMber so here we go. This ceramics piece I made was inspired by Christmas tree and feather duster worms, which are #polychaetes. The photo by Becky A. Bauer at the end shows the real worms! #SciArt #ceramics #pottery #handbuiltpottery

Cool worm things: The tube of Diopatra cuprea. Made from algae and shells of the dwarf surf clam (Mulinia lateralis).
This species of polychaete is also known as plumed worm or the decorator worm. #NoVERMber

a close up of a fish eating a shrimp in the water . Alt: The sand striker worm catching a fish by the face.

They're almost blind and use their antennae to sense prey. Their jaws are so strong they can chop their prey, small fish, crustaceans, and even octopus, in half.
They may be scary but I think they're also beautiful.

They're pretty quick. They need to be able to strike prey quickly and retreat into their burrow to hide from predators quickly. They have been recorded retreating into their burrows faster than you can (probably) bicycle (20 kmph/13 mph).

This ambush predator can grow up to 3 metres (10 ft) in length, living in a burrow in the seafloor, with large jaws that snatch their prey from the water above.
