I created Subdued Dudes with Loud Suits as part of my series of brodalisques with generous support from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. In this video, I describe the artwork in detail plus I explain why I paint men posed as odalisques.

Do you think Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres would have put on a sparkly gown before sharing his art? Regardless, you can see my painting in Omaha, NE during the 2025 Bemis Benefit Art Auction.

I wondered if Matisse influenced Erte as their themes are often the same. I used the combined magic of my new iPad and Procreare to draw a Matisse odalisque with Erte decoration.

The "Muße der Odalisken" (Leisure of the Odalisques) by German artist Ferdinand Max Bredt shows an idealized scene of two young harem ladies, so-called odalisques, in a splendid room in a palace with "oriental" tiles, carpets and a shallow basin. Sunlight falls in through an opened door which leads into a garden, bathing the whole scene in a charming interplay of light and shade, which, at the same time, emanates an atmosphere of both a refreshing breeze and gentle warmth. One of the two women, in vaguely Turkish dress, plays an exotic Komuz lute in the background, the other one, the painting’s main figure, reclines on the carpet, her left hand idly twirling in the water, her eyes towards the observer. With great poise Bredt manages to add a seducing-sensuous notion to this seemingly innocent scene of the two chastely dressed ladies, simply by means of the reclined odalisque’s direct look, allowing us to make her the focus of our attention. Though little known today, Bredt was widely recognized in his lifetime for his works categorized in the "Orientalist" art style. The Leipzig native had learned the trade of a book dealer before he studied painting at the academies of Munich and Stuttgart. Bredt rendered his impressions of numerous journeys through Turkey, Greece and Tunisia in his works, which made him a successful orient painter of his time. His works were shown in Berlin, London, Paris and Chicago, his "oriental" motifs, nudes and fairy tale scenes were particularly popular. But he also showed an interest in "oriental" architecture: he built his studio and residence in Ruhpolding in Arabian style and contributed to the "oriental design" of a public bath in Stuttgart, Germany.

Léger first saw the work of the Cubists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso at the Paris gallery of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Around 1909 Léger began to experiment with geometric shapes, complementary colors, and strong outlines, although his paintings remained largely nonrepresentational until after World War I. During Great War, the Musée du Louvre, Paris, closed its doors to protect its collections. When the museum reopened in 1920–21, artists were among its most regular visitors, spurring a new interest in classicism. Fernand Léger’s fascination with the art of the past, as well as his experiences of the war, had a profound impact on his work. Léger invoked classicism in his quest to find monumental figures for his paintings. He built on the subject of the odalisque in elaborate settings, updating the classical figure with solid, machine-like imagery and densely packed, colorful compositions. In the years following, he introduced volumetric forms that resembled pistons and pipes into his compositions, joining others in the Parisian vanguard in charting a more sober, conservative course that placed renewed emphasis on objective observation. Substituting hard metallic tubes for pliant flesh and flat patterned disks for soft and dense pillows, the artist updated the classical figure of the odalisque (a female slave or concubine often pictured in the history of art as a reclining nude) with his particular blend of Cubism and machine aesthetics. "Reclining Woman" demonstrates Léger’s interest in producing “everyday poetic images”: paintings in which the manufactured object is the “principal personage,” shown as precisely as possible to reveal an absolute sculptural value rather than sentimental associations. This work exemplifies the Purist style, a kind of industrial classicism that focused on utilitarian objects. Léger hoped that through such paintings, art would become accessible to the whole of modern society rather than to just a privileged few.

This beautiful woman, casually lying on a couch, is very different from the standard odalisque formula of the era. She presents a more graceful genre that betrays the intimacy of the painter with his model. Many art historians identify her as Court's wife. Her oval face, lightly-rouge lips, rosy cheeks, bare right shoulder, and slight twist of her long brunette hair with her left hand sporting a gold ring on her wedding finger all support her expression of connivance or intimate familiarity with the artist. She is draped in warm colors under a refined blue blanket exposing just a hint of the white gown she wears while laying atop multiple lush cardinal pillows. After the death of Court in 1866, collector Alfred Bruyas acquired the portrait to exemplify the "characteristic of the painting of his time and the manner of the author." Bruyas appreciated Court's painting so much that when his gallery published a catalog in 1876, he wrote of Court, "His best portrait is the woman with half-body, with blue drapery, lying on a couch, her type of predilection. You have to love someone to do something beautiful.” A student of Baron Gros, Joseph Désiré Court is an example of a transitional painter, shared between the school of David and that of Ingres, between the ancient heroes and the refined portraits of his contemporaries. After many large Herculean paintings in his early years that received a mixed reception at times, Court focused on portraiture and gender figures including official commissions from the French "July Monarchy" as well as the Russian court.
