I meant to overwrite it all when I got on that ship. A new name. A new sky. A new stormy city with foreign alphabets curling down its walls like ivy. I left my old garments at the dock - a funeral of fabric, dust, and breathless, strangled sobs. I put my face forward into the driving rain, and embraced the winds of my new home. I wasn't looking back. But you followed. Hiraeth. Perhaps you tugged on a thread of my cape, climbed into the strands of my hair that I did not leave behind. You waited until I was asleep, exhausted by the move, before you struck. You strangled me then, choking me till I whimpered the name of the place I was born, the place I was spat from. You never let me go, a lover with cold, cruel hands. Not to kill. Just to remind.
