Further death from bird flu confirmed in Co Cork A swan found dead in east Cork earlier this week has tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), or bird flu. The Department of Agriculture has confirmed the case, adding “an increased number of deaths in swans have been reported”. Since the start of the year avian flu has been confirmed in 69 wild birds on the island of Ireland. It follows the discovery of a flock of dead swans on private land at Loughaderry Lake near Castlemartyr in east Cork on Thursday. A Department of Agriculture laboratory test of one of the dead birds on Tuesday confirmed HPAI avian influenza (H5N1). In a statement the department reminded landowners it is their responsibility to remove dead birds suspected of avian flu. “The department is unable to collect, remove or provide treatment to sick wild birds. Where they are not needed for surveillance, the routine collection of dead birds’ rests with the landowner,” it said. “It is the responsibility of the local authority to safely dispose of carcasses where they are on public land.” Five outbreaks of the HPAI strain of the virus were detected on commercial poultry farms over the winter. Multiple bird flu cases have also been detected...

Bird flu confirmed in dead swan found in Co Cork BIRD FLU HAS been confirmed in a swan that was found dead in Co Cork. It’s understood that 11 swans were found dead at the site on private lands at Loughaderry Lake near Castlemartyr. A spokesperson from the Department of Agriculture remarked that there has been an “increased number of deaths in swans” reported at the location. The Department carries out bird flu surveillance testing throughout the year on targeted dead wild birds to understand if it is circulating in the wild bird population and then provides information to the poultry industry to inform them of risk. The Department, however, said it is unable to collect, remove or provide treatment to sick wild birds. “Where they are not needed for surveillance, the routine collection of dead birds’ rests with the landowner,” said the Department. Advertisement “It is the responsibility of the Local Authority to safely dispose of carcasses where they are on public land.” The Department also reminded the public of the importance of reporting sick or dead wild birds to the Avian Check app, which helps to monitor the presence of bird flu in the wild bird population. Depending on the number and species of the birds, samples may...

Bird flu case discovered in flock of dead swans in east Cork - The Irish Independent The bird was found amongst a flock of dead swans on private land at Loughaderry Lake near Castlemartyr on Thursday. The Department of Agriculture has confirmed the case through the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory. It added that "an increased number of deaths in swans have been reported" at this location. It is believed that all the swans will be tested for HPAI. Since the start of this year, HPAI has been confirmed amongst 69 wild birds. The Department has said contact with wild birds and environmental contamination remain major risks for the spread of HPAI. A housing order for all poultry and captive birds in Ireland remains in place. Last October, Fota Wildlife Park in Cork remained closed for ten weeks following the discovery of cases of bird flu in three dead geese and a fourth sick goose that were part of a flock of 20. Cases of the virus were recorded amongst commercial poultry in Ireland over the winter months. Poultry farms in Northern Ireland have seen numerous outbreaks, with HPAI detected most recently detected in a commercial poultry premises near Omagh in Co Tyrone on Wednesday, March 4. While HPAI poses little risk to humans, the Department have...

Bird flu confirmed after dead swans found in east Cork A swan which was found dead in east Cork earlier this week has tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) or bird flu. The Department of Agriculture has confirmed the case, adding that "an increased number of deaths in swans have been reported". It follows the discovery of a flock of dead swans on private land at Loughaderry Lake near Castlemartyr on Thursday. RTÉ News understands that 11 swans were found dead at the site. Cork County Council said it has been in contact with the Department in relation to the situation and that "arrangements have been made for the safe and controlled removal of the carcasses", which will be carried out by the Cork County Civil Defence and Department officials today (SAT). It is understood the swans will all be tested for the virus. Cork County Council said it will continue to monitor the situation and "liaise with the relevant authorities as required". Since last November a housing order for all poultry and captive birds in Ireland has been in place due to the heightened risk posed by bird flu. Five outbreaks of the HPAI strain of the virus were detected on commercial poultry farms here over the...

15 dead swans as bird flu confirmed in East Cork Four dead swans were collected at Loughaderra lake outside Castlemartyr on March 3, of which at least one is understood to have tested positive for bird flu. When 11 dead swans were reported there on Thursday, they were not removed. At least 15 dead swans were seen there on Friday. Kieran O’Sullivan, who lives locally and is involved with Ballintotis Community Council, which volunteers to protect and improve the lake, said that no authorities have taken responsibility for removing the dead birds. The department said it is the local authority’s responsibility to collect dead birds on public land, or the landowner’s responsibility if they are on private land. Cork City Council said the birds are on private land, so it is not its jurisdiction. The birds are all likely infected with bird flu, so must be disposed of carefully and incinerated, to prevent the disease’s spread, Mr O’Sullivan said. The local community do not have hazmat suits and do not know how to incinerate the birds themselves, he said. “It's a contaminated bird, it's not a bird that died of natural causes or a bird that was shot or injured. So Joe Soap landowners or anyone are not meant to...

How Are We Preparing For the Next Pandemic? In March 2020, the World Health Organization’s director-general declared COVID-19 a pandemic, saying the agency was “deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction.” Since the virus emerged six years ago, the disease has taken the lives of more than 7 million people, according to data tracked by KFF, a health research organization. COVID infections have left hundreds of millions of people with long COVID, a complex and chronic condition. “We’re going to have more pandemics,” said Jennifer Nuzzo, professor of epidemiology and director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University School of Public Health, noting that data shows that the chances of future pandemics and the frequency with which they could occur are increasing. Scientists have long warned that pandemics are inevitable. Research in recent years has estimated the chance of a COVID-19-like pandemic as 28% within the next decade and 38% in our lifetimes. Here, FRONTLINE examines world preparedness for the next pandemic at a time of global health funding cuts, policy shifts and the continued spread of misinformation. Changes in Global Health Funding and Policies In the United States, the second Trump administration has been reshaping the...

Blood pressure trends and disparities across the COVID-19 pandemic in a large diverse urban population The COVID-19 pandemic represented an unprecedented disruption to healthcare systems worldwide and posed particular challenges for the management of blood pressure. Early in the pandemic, multiple studies reported short-term increases in population-level blood pressure and worsening hypertension control, raising concerns about the pandemic’s potential long-term cardiometabolic consequences. However, the durability of these changes and whether blood pressure levels eventually returned to pre-pandemic trends remain incompletely understood. The pandemic substantially altered healthcare delivery and disrupted routine outpatient care for millions of Americans. For patients with hypertension—who rely on regular blood pressure monitoring, medication titration, and continuity of care—these disruptions may have affected disease management [1, 2]. Even more, multiple studies suggest delayed diagnosis of new hypertension cases due to the disruption of outpatient primary care visits [3]. Additionally, the pandemic exacerbated financial, social, emotional, lifestyle, and other stressors that may have led to transient rises in blood pressure [2, 4]. Emerging evidence also suggests that pandemic-related stressors and disruptions in care were not experienced uniformly, with greater impacts among racial and ethnic minority populations and individuals with lower socioeconomic status—as reflected by income, education, employment, and neighborhood context [5, 6]. Long-standing disparities in hypertension prevalence, control, and outcomes among racial and...

Bird flu detections decline in Europe after intense winter Avian influenza detections in birds have started to decline across Europe following an autumn and winter during which circulation of the virus in waterfowl reached its highest level in five years, Reuters reported, citing a report from EU health officials on Thursday. The spread of the highly pathogenic viral disease, commonly called bird flu, is a concern for governments and the poultry industry due to the devastation it can cause to flocks, its impact on food prices and a risk of a new pandemic. Detections have begun to fall since December, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the EU Reference Laboratory (EURL) said in a quarterly report on the virus. Between November 29 and February 27, authorities recorded 406 outbreaks of bird flu in domestic birds in 32 European countries and 2,108 outbreaks in wild birds, they said. While detections in domestic birds were similar to the same quarter in the past two years, detections in wild birds were still three times higher than last year and almost five times higher than two years ago – a legacy of the unusually intense autumn-winter peak, they said. Most infections in poultry...

Detections of bird flu start to decline across Europe - report Detections of avian influenza (bird flu) in birds in Europe have begun to decline, according to a new report from EU health officials. This follows an autumn and winter period in which bird flu circulation in waterfowl reached its highest level in five years. According to the latest quarterly monitoring report from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the EU Reference Laboratory (EURL), the number of recorded outbreaks is higher overall than recent years for the same period. The report noted that the risk posed by bird flu to the general public remains low. Bird flu Between November 29, 2025 and February 27, 2026, authorities reported 406 outbreaks of bird flu in domestic birds and 2,108 in wild birds across 32 European countries. The report states that cases in domestic birds were similar to the same quarter in the past two years. However, detections in wild birds were three times higher than last year and almost five times higher than two years ago. Since December, detections have moved onto a downward trajectory, "in line with the expected seasonal pattern towards spring". The officials said that most infections on poultry farms...

H5N1 bird flu spreads to sea otters and sea lions along San Mateo coast, wildlife experts say Researchers say the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in California elephant seals has spread to other marine mammals, including a sea otter and sea lion. However, wildlife officials are cautiously optimistic the outbreak will remain contained. It has so far only been detected on beaches in San Mateo County, although testing is being conducted along the coastline. The strain of bird flu found in these animals contains a mutation that allows it to more easily transmit between mammals. It is also a different variation than the ones found in dairy cows and commercial poultry. This one is Eurasian in origin, and was first seen in 2022. It has been detected in birds that fly along the Pacific Flyway, and is responsible for a mass mortality event in 2023 in northern fur seals on an island in eastern Russia, said Christine Johnson, the director of UC Davis’ Center for Pandemic Insights, during a press conference Thursday morning. Johnson said researchers think this is the first detection of the A3 variation of the virus on the Pacific Coast and therefore likely a new introduction into North America, she said. In late February, a team of researchers from UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, California...

Biden to improve US pandemic response Soon after taking office on Jan. 20, President-Elect Joe Biden plans to enact executive actions that will significantly change US policy in several areas, including the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic. Notably, these executive actions won’t require Congress to approve new legislation. Instead, Biden can change these policies on his own. Biden said he will sign an executive order that will require people to wear masks inside federal buildings and while traveling between states on plains, trains, and buses. The mandate’s goal is to limit the spread of the airborne coronavirus. The Trump administration rejected recommendations from US health experts to enact mask requirements for people using mass transportation. Biden will also ask Americans to wear masks throughout his first 100 days in office. President Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned the usefulness of masks in limiting the spread of the coronavirus. A Cornell University study found that Trump was the single largest source of coronavirus misinformation in the world. Biden has promised that his administration’s response to coronavirus will be guided by science and advice from public health experts. World Health Organization membership The Trump Administration officially moved in early July to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), a United Nations agency that works to combat disease and improve the health of people around the world. Trump has criticized the WHO for having a pro-China bias, and for being too slow to respond to the initial coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China. Public health experts and Democrats criticized Trump’s decision to leave the WHO, which they said would harm efforts to fight the global coronavirus pandemic. The Trump Administration submitted its withdrawal notification to the United Nations secretary-general in early July. But the withdrawal requires one-year advance notice, which means it would take effect July 6, 2021. Then-presidential-candidate Joe Biden responded to the Trump Administration’s planned withdrawal by tweeting July 7 that he would move to rejoin the WHO on his first day as president. “Americans are safer when America is engaged in strengthening global health,” Biden wrote on Twitter. “On my first day as President, I will rejoin the @WHO and restore our leadership on the world stage.” Jon Oliver discussed the World Health Organization, and the potential negative consequences of Trump’s decision to withdraw from the international body, on his program LastWeekTonight. ProPublica reported the Trump Administration directed US diplomats and health officials to limit their engagement with the WHO. NPR reported the Trump Administration's WHO policies have damaged collaboration between the US and WHO on the coronavirus pandemic and other global health issues.

In 2020, Joe Biden was elected president, following Trump’s catastrophic mismanagement of the COVID pandemic.
