The #Mönchengladbach City Council says NO to the #paymentcard and utilises the opt-out option provided by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The introduction of the payment card would have made the everyday lives of refugees unnecessarily difficult and led to more administrative work.

We vote in solidarity! The year 2024 provided enough moments for us to come together: The newly passed repatriation law of 2024, for example, accelerates deportations, criminalises sea rescue and stigmatises refugees with the #paymentcard.

Most of the initiatives are planning or already organising exchange campaigns to support those affected by the payment card.

There are also some places where structures, groups or campaigns against the discriminatory #paymentcard are still being set up that we know of.

In many places where the #paymentcard already exists, there are solidarity initiatives to support refugees with cash; you can find an overview on our website. Exchange your cash for vouchers there! We say no to the payment card!

The payment card is disempowering, repressive and marginalising. We call for the #paymentcard to be discontinued and abolished in the federal states where it has already been introduced!

In its FAQ on the #paymentcard on its website, the @freiheitsrechte.org (Society for Civil Liberties) describes further cases of how cash restrictions in particular lead to marginalisation and make participation in social life more difficult.

Because the #paymentcard is not accepted in all shops, cannot be used for private sales such as at flea markets or kleinanzeigen and bank transfers are not possible at all or only with official authorisation, low-cost shopping is made considerably more difficult or even completely impossible.

At the request of the municipal authorities, the state of Hesse has now forbidden the city from doing so.

The everyday lives of #paymentcard users show that the cash restriction leads to massive problems.

Now resistance to the payment card is also growing in Hesse! After the #paymentcard was introduced in Hesse in December 2024, the Committee for Social Affairs, Integration, Housing, Children and Family in #Wiesbaden is now calling for unlimited cash withdrawals for refugees despite the payment card.

We are pleased that opposition to the #paymentcard is also growing in politics. The payment card is disempowering, repressive and marginalising. We are happy for every city and municipality that is not willing to support this discriminatory tool.

On Thursday, a majority of the Düsseldorf city council voted against the introduction of the #paymentcard for refugees. Düsseldorf is thus utilising the opt-out regulation available in North Rhine-Westphalia.

On Thursday, the head of the social affairs department made it clear to Cologne's social affairs committee that the administration's doubts about the #paymentcard are so great that it will not be introduced. In doing so, the administration is agreeing with the majority vote of the council members.

Other cities are also opposing the introduction of the #paymentcard. #Lüneburg recently passed a resolution against the payment card. Now there is also resistance in #Potsdam and the city will not introduce a payment card and will continue to pay out money to refugees in cash.
