Hidden Plant Stem Cell Regulators Linked to Crop Growth and Yield

Hidden Plant Stem Cell Regulators Linked to Crop Growth and Yield

Scientists mapped ~5,000 CLAVATA3‑positive shoot cells in maize and Arabidopsis, publishing an atlas in Developmental Cell (Aug 2025). Data could aid breeding crops. Read more: getnews.me/hidden-plant-stem-cell-r... #plantstemcells #cropyield

CLAVATA-WUSCHEL signaling in the shoot meristem Summary: This Review discusses how CLV-WUS signaling coordinates stem cell proliferation with differentiation, highlighting commonalities and differences between CLV-WUS pathways in different species.

I then found that there is nothing left to study in the plant stem cell field, so I decided to move on.

But before doing so, I highlighted everything we learned in an overview review article on #PlantStemCells for @dev-journal.bsky.social. This is now my most-cited publication:

CLAVATA signalling shapes barley inflorescence by controlling activity and determinacy of shoot meristem and rachilla - Nature Communications Grasses have evolved a wide variety of inflorescence architectures. Here Vardanega et. al show how the barley CLV1 receptor and FCP1 peptide signal interact to control meristem shape, organ formation ...

An updated model of shoot apical meristem regulation by ERECTA family and CLAVATA3 signaling pathways in Arabidopsis The shoot apical meristem (SAM) gives rise to above-ground organs. Its size is relatively constant due to the balance of stem cell replenishment versus cell recruitment into new organs. In angiosperms...

Stem Cells and Differentiation in Vascular Tissues Plant vascular tissues are crucial for the long-distance transport of water, nutrients, and a multitude of signal molecules throughout the plant body and, therefore, central to plant growth and development. The intricate development of vascular tissues is orchestrated by unique populations of dedicated stem cells integrating endogenous as well as environmental cues. This review summarizes our current understanding of vascular-related stem cell biology and of vascular tissue differentiation. We present an overview of the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing the maintenance and fate determination of vascular stem cells and highlight the interplay between intrinsic and external cues. In this context, we emphasize the role of transcription factors, hormonal signaling, and epigenetic modifications. We also discuss emerging technologies and the large repertoire of cell types associated with vascular tissues, which have the potential to provide unprecedented insights into cellular specialization and anatomical adaptations to distinct ecological niches. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Plant Biology, Volume 75 is May 2024. Please see http://www.annualreviews.org/page/journal/pubdates for revised estimates.
