Niger Community Residents Decry Life-Threatening Air Pollution From Plastics Melting, Recycling Factory Residents of Gidan Madara, behind Tradefair Complex in Minna, Niger State, have alleged life-threatening pollution from a factory which they claim has mutated into a full-scale plastics melting and recycling facility within their residential area. The community in a petition made available to Saharareporters on Friday said the factory, originally a water processing plant, now melts and recycles all grades of plastics, releasing toxic fumes, soot, and chemicals. They added that repeated complaints to the factory owner and environmental authorities since 2019 have yielded no action. In their petition to the Niger State House of Assembly and the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, residents outlined the risks posed by the facility. They asked for immediate intervention to protect lives: "This letter is a special appeal to the Commissioner for urgent intervention to shut down Golden Age Plastics melting and Recycling facility, to save the Residents of Gidan Madara and Dadin Kowa communities from premature deaths resulting from inhalation of noxious chemicals plastics fumes and soot, emanating from Golden Age Water Factory; which has mutated from water processing factory to plastics junk yard, where all grades of plastics wastes are melted and recycled in residential area, with utter disregard to...

Common plastics appear to be the key trigger for toxic algal blooms Petroleum-based microplastics have been shown to trigger sustained algal blooms, explosive overgrowths of algae that can turn water green and toxic. The minute plastics wipe out the tiny animals that normally keep those blooms in check. By removing these grazers, the particles can drive oxygen levels down, fuel toxic outbreaks, and cause the kind of ecological damage long blamed mainly on excess nutrients. Finding the trigger in ponds In a grid of outdoor pond tanks, clear water thickened with algae once petroleum-derived plastic entered the system. Tracking those changes over three months, Prof. Jonathan Shurin at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) documented that ponds receiving fossil-based plastic repeatedly lost their grazer populations and tipped into dense algal blooms. Biodegradable plastics placed in identical ponds disrupted the system far less often and rarely produced the same sustained algal dominance. Those contrasts pointed to plastic type itself as a driver of bloom risk and set up the deeper question of what changed inside the food web once the grazers began to die off. Grazers fell first Small copepods, tiny crustaceans that graze on algae, suffered most of the damage in the petroleum-plastic tanks. Copepods drift through the water, and they...

Waarom het nu nóg belangrijker is om plastic op te ruimen Raap overal waar je kan het plastic op. Dat is de oproep van natuurorganisaties, want het broedseizoen start weer en vogels gaan dood als ze plastic eten.

'Wash Water' Used When Recycling Plastics May Warrant Closer Scrutiny Newswise — Washington D.C. – Recycling is one answer to the growth in plastic waste but treating “wash water” used to clean recycled plastic before re-use can produce safer recycled plastics, according to a new study. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set a goal to achieve a plastic recycling rate of up to 50% by 2030 which would involve an 8- to 10-fold increase in recycling efforts to meet the challenge. Plastic packaging waste streams generally contain different polymers and impurities including paper, organic residues, adhesives, metals, glass and inks. The contaminants and the additives present in these polymers include plasticizers, antioxidants, colorants, light and heat stabilizers, lubricants, antistatic agents, slip compounds, heavy metals and other chemicals. A new study by Iowa State University researchers examines various techniques for washing post-consumer plastics before they are re-used and identifies potential chemicals of concern. The research was supported by IAFNS’ Food Packaging Safety & Sustainability Committee. The study focuses on contaminants in post-consumer polypropylene wash water with the aim of making recycling processes more effective, sustainable and safer by lowering potential exposure to harmful chemicals. Polypropylene is a versatile plastic that is used for a wide range of applications including...
