Important #PoopScience factoid here! #2026MMM
#PoopScience is back, baby! We left Twitter, but we kept what matters.
Have we brought the #PoopScience hashtag over to these skies?
A baboon poop perched on top of a rock in the Guinean savannah
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a baboon in possession of a good rock, must be in want of a poopβ¦

Yet enough shining example of scientific insights supplied by poop, & in this instance, penguin poop observed over time, but from SPACE. #PoopScience: is there nothing it can't do? π§ͺπ§π©π°οΈ
Penguin poop! #poopscience #2025MMM
Oldest known fossil evidence of lepidopterans (butterflies & moths), from the Triassic (~236 mya) of Argentina! Scales from the wings of these insects were preserved in dicynodont coprolites, & were likely on plants eaten by the dicynodonts. www.science.org/content/arti... #PoopScience π§ͺπ©πͺ¨π¦
The fact that there is a #poopscience hashtag fills me with joy
Some beautiful #poopscience for your day.
More #PoopScience, & this time inspired those ever-reliable avian mega-poopers, penguins. π§ͺπ§π©

Fig. 2 from Bariel et al. (2021) Rainfall structures the gelada gut microbiome. a Partial residual plot of Shannon alpha diversity index according to cumulative rainfall (in mm). Black dots represent the partial residuals from the LMM (i.e., showing the association between cumulative rainfall & alpha diversity, while controlling for all other predictors). The blue line & confidence intervals come from a linear regression (for representation only). Seven outlier samples (with a particularly low Shannon index) were omitted for clarity of representation. b Visualization of between-sample dissimilarity (based on Aitchison distance) on the first principal component (PC1) according to cumulative rainfall. c Compositional barplot of the 5 most abundant phyla in the dry (< 100mm of rain in the past month, N = 362) and wet (> 200mm of rain in the past month, N = 282) samples (cumulative rainfall was converted to a categorical variable for representation purposes). d Loading scores of each amplicon sequence variant (ASV) on the first principal component. ASVs with a loading score > 0.4 (characteristics of the wet season) and < β0.4 (characteristic of the dry season) are colored.
Baniel et al. (2021) found gelada gut microbiome composition covaried w/ rainfall & temp suggesting responses to dietary & thermoregulatory challenges. Ex: rainy season => cellulolytic/fermentative bacteria specializing in digesting grass #poopscience #2025MMM doi.org/10.1186/s401...
Photos of Katie King, a white woman with dark brown hair, wearing a pastel blazer and conference name tag. She is smiling and standing next to her poster.
Shout-out to Katie King @katieking1110.bsky.social for an awesome poster on paternal care and fecal glucocorticoid metabolites in Red-bellied Lemur fathers. She looks at fluctuating concentrations pre- and post-birth & associations with care behaviors. #AABA2025 #PoopScience #BehavioralEndocrinology
π€£ Wild Fact: Did you know wombat poop is cube-shaped?
π§ Yep, they drop tiny poop cubes to mark their territory.

Figures showing phenotypic associations for cortisol: inhibitory control (negative linear) and a robotic cat novel object (negative quadratic).
#Cortisol was negatively associated with inhibitory control on the cylinder task and showed a negative quadratic relationship (inverted u-shape) with shy-bold temperament as measured by the (creepy!) robotic cat novel object. #PoopScience

You can extract pollen, plant fragments, or even ancient DNA out of well-preserved π© frozen in permafrost, preserved in a dry cave, or even extracted from the hard rock record, like dinosaur feces (ancient poop is also know as a coprolite). #poopscience

What did this #poopscience reveal? Seabirds only showed up at this site 5,000 years ago, during a period of cooler climates. Shortly after, there was a big increase in tussac, the tall coastal grasses many birds and seal lions rely on for a habitat today.
BEHOLD: The Poozeum! It's the world's largest coprolite museum and resource center (a coprolite is fossil poop), including articles, videos, and photos. #PoopScience https://poozeum.com/
We've long thought migrating birds like geese and ducks had to be involved, maybe from eggs sticking to their feet, or getting caught in a bit of pondweed tangled around a leg. This new study suggests another possible mechanism: bird poop! #poopscience...

Welcome, new followers! I tweet about climate change, ice age ecosystems, nerdy things I enjoy, fun nature stuff, diversity in STEM, issues in higher education, and the occasional #poopscience. Iβm my whole self on Twitter. I look forward to getting to know you, too.

I have an undergrad working on models for 3-D printed pollen grains, and she made me this tenure trophy using the new model she developed! Itβs the dung fungus spore we use to identify megafauna extinctions in cores. #BEASTLab #poopscience
