"Landon Thomas Jr. has not worked at The Times since early 2019 after editors discovered his failure to abide by our ethical standards," Times spokesperson Danielle Rhoades Ha told the Post. Murdoch’s NY Post 11/13/2025

What else was uncovered in NYT’s 2019 internal investigation of Thomas’s communications with Epstein?
Who did the investigation? How did they conduct it?
Thomas’s emails appear to have been sent from a NYT email account.
Past time to bring back the #PublicEditor
Re: NYT, Thomas & Epstein
Remember AGSulzberger’s @nytimes.com has rejected calls to bring back an independent #PublicEditor (like @sulliview.bsky.social)
AG needs to bring back a Public Editor.

Elimination of the #Ombudsman or #PublicEditor was short-sighted, even arrogant. The best of them were a strong, trusted reciprocal channel between readers and reporters, headline writers and editors — and an alert to the publisher.
Every headline/sub headline, should have a byline. Heads and subs frame the article and are often all that viewers read. Publishing without integral bylines too often misleads, and disrespects readers and excellent reporting.
And, many #NewsPubs, #MassNewsMedia need a #PublicEditor, now!👇🏼
NYT is a successful business that employs some excellent journalists, often stifled by click-driven headline writing news editors. Paywalled #LegacyNews influences a small, but relevant minority of #Voters. It’s disgusting that arrogance at the #NYT still dismisses the value of a #PublicEditor.
Shortsightedness of the #NYT, canceling the #PublicEditor position, foolishly rationalized
#SocialMedia as the replacement (Nepo AG Sulzberger promoting Dean Banquet, Joe Kahn) then ignoring or passively demeaning social media posts. Some trash, but no editor to respect, answer valid queries.
I posted this pre-Musk Twitter years ago. No one has disagreed:
“Elimination of the #Ombudsman or #PublicEditor was short-sighted, sometimes arrogant. The best of them were a strong, trusted reciprocal channel between readers, reporters and editors — and an alert to the publisher.”
So damn obvious.
I respect your reply, but explain your distinction between “populous grievance” and “personal grievance.” What if the NYT had retained a competent #PublicEditor or #Ombudsman like Daniel Okrent or Margaret Sullivan? Would you direct your frustration to the NYT and expect an accountable answer?
Peter Baker, he who never votes, is a reporter. My deep read on his piece is that it’s premised on judgment; by NYT sanctimonious standards it should be labeled as opinion. Of course, it’s the judgment of an editor — adding another buttress to the unequivocal structural need for a #PublicEditor.
