While the details of #Rawls / #JohnRawls theory of #justice are debated in some circles, it does seem like a plausible test for justice:

would you agree to this being done, if you didn't know who you were?

How are things going, according to this test?

John #Rawls built #political #liberalism on the 'fact of pluralism': the idea that we are divided by stable ‘comprehensive doctrines’, like religion or philosophy. But this view might be ‘overly intellectualistic’ for the contemporary world.

John Rawls' theory of justice proposes that what's just is what you would agree to, *if you didn't know who you were.*

How are things going according to this standard?

I continue less colorfully: "We need the Rawlsian assumption of reasonably socialized people for any version of democratic legitimacy. A pragmatist insight/.../ is that when inquiring about morality we are always somewhere and our beliefs, although historically developed, are in fact there."

Today, #Rawls in the #philosophy Baccalaureate exam in France, with a passage on the value of political freedom, written before social media.

IMO, Subject 2 suggests an objection to Rawls' view (and Mill's).

A #democracy in which there were no #disagreement about what constituted the #good—morally, metaphysically, and religiously—would suggest something sinister and decidedly undemocratic.

A passage from pages 455-456 of the revised edition of A Theory of Justice by John Rawls:

Here we should note that in times of social doubt and loss of faith in long established values, there is a tendency to fall back on the virtues of integrity: truthfulness and sincerity, lucidity and commitment, or, as some say, authenticity. If no one knows what is true, at least we can make our beliefs our own in our own way and not adopt them as handed to us by others. If the traditional moral rules are no longer relevant and we cannot agree which ones should take their place, we can in any event decide with a clear head how we mean to act and stop pretending that somehow or other it is already decided for us and we must accept this or that authority. Now of course the virtues of integrity are virtues, and among the excellences of free persons. Yet while necessary, they are not sufficient; for their definition allows for most any content: a tyrant might display these attributes to a high degree, and by doing so exhibit a certain charm, not deceiving himself by political pretenses and excuses of fortune. It is impossible to construct a moral view from these virtues alone; being virtues of form they are in a sense secondary. But joined to the appropriate conception of justice, one that allows for autonomy and objectivity correctly understood, they come into their own. The idea of the original position, and the principles chosen there, show how this is achieved.

Thinking about the appeal of "authentic" and "unfiltered" politicians in light of this observation from A Theory of Justice about the importance that the virtues of integrity assume in morally disordered societies, and their inability to bear that weight

#Rawls contributed greatly with his Veil of Ignorance thought experiement to the way we should think about creating societies. But it has a flaw. The self-generation of our model of the world makes it impossible for us to imagine ourselves as anything we haven't experienced ourselves.

We just can't

After all, even in terms of public reason if we accept Rawlsian reasonable pluralism we have to define somehow the "reasonable" or the "common sense, and the methods and conclusions of science, when not controversial."

Happy 104th birthday, John #Rawls. "Social and economic inequalities, for example inequalities of wealth and authority, are just only if they result in compensating benefits for everyone, and in particular for the least advantaged members of society." #philosophy #justice https://buff.ly/4k5nalN
