Looking at the recent #ECMWF forecast of zonal mean zonal wind at 10°N and 10 hPa #PolarVortex, it seems that the split #SSW was seen by the model initialised on Feb 23, literally 10 days before it is happening. This corresponds to the current skill of subseasonal to seasonal #S2S forecast systems

The NH #PolarVortex is very weak right now, with a hint from the ECMWF of winds at 10 hPa, 60 N becoming slightly below zero m/s (i.e., turning easterly) for 1 day. Then, a very rapid strengthening thereafter. Whether this officially becomes a major SSW or not remains to be seen. #S2S

Looks like a textbook +EPO is expected this upcoming week. Notice how similar the GEFS mean 500mb GPH solution is to the +EPO composite, low 500mb heights across Alaska and the Gulf of Alaska which also supports higher heights over Hudson Bay. #s2s #wxsky

I have been tracking this for a while. The combination of a stratospheric reflection event just recently, favorable tropical Pacific convection patterns, and a preceding Greenland/Arctic High will result in one wicked week of cold for the Central and Eastern US and Southern Canada. #S2S

The 00Z 5 Feb 2025 GEFS run shows a slight weakening of the #PolarVortex at 10 hPa before a quick rebound and strengthening trend later in the month. This is more representative of a strat reflection event, which could hold the cold in for Canada and N US into late month. #S2S
