It was a simple document recording agreement to a set of “just and equal laws.” The document also described a form of self governance that was an early version of the idea of consent of the governed. These details were hammered out after The Mayflower crossed the Atlantic Ocean. The ship was anchored within sight of what is now the town of Provincetown at the northern tip of the peninsula that separates Cape Cod from the Atlantic Ocean.

On this day in 1620, the men aboard The Mayflower established a temporary government that became the model for governance of the 13 American colonies and the independent nation they would become. They signed the Mayflower Compact.
