Back in Portugal 🇵🇹 for #SESP2025 — and for the first time, #SESP itself is happening in Europe (Lisbon).
This Saturday, 3:45–4:45 PM → Room Milão
Chairing a symposium on #intellectual #humility in the #wild: #polarization, rural disputes, and #forecasting #societal #progress.
🏆 Great news from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology (SESP)! 🎉
@davidamodio.bsky.social won the 2024 SESP Career Trajectory Award & Rosa Kamiloglu received the 2024 SESP Dissertation Award! 🔬👏
2 out of 8 top social psychology awards went to UvA researchers! 🚀 #SESP #SocialPsychology
60.1% of religious leaders in the US believe climate change is happening and that humans play a major role
47.8% of religiosity leaders never talk about climate change with their congregation
Most religious leaders *believe* climate change is happening, but DON’T talk to their congregations about it. “Why?” asks Gregg Sparkman. “They talk about floods and fires and other disasters!”

People believed perceived support (baseline a little under 50%) for climate reform is higher when you remind them of recently passed climate policies. Effects are slightly smaller (sig interaction) when you remind them of recent research showing that government doesn’t represent the people.
Climate policy shapes our norms: when you remind people of recent climate legislation, they think more people support climate reform. Reminding them that government is unrepresentative blunts (but doesn’t squash) the effect 😅

experimental social psychology often strives to address social issues. Yet most of them appear to focus on the past, ignore history/temporal dynamics and confuse levels of analyses. Case to point: @ #SESP nobody talks about highly likely layoffs of ~20+% of the white collars due to AI revolution.
Climate policy supporters outnumber opponents 2 to 1 - but Americans believe the OPPOSITE is true

Writing a nature gratitude letter increases perceived size of nature and inclusion of nature in self-identity, which in turn predict more pro-environmental behavior intentions
Writing a letter of gratitude to nature increases intent to engage in pro-environment behaviors

Google trends from 2004-2023 show highest interest in how to be happy, followed by how to get rich. No one is searching for how to solve climate change 😅
Food actions that both decrease carbon emissions AND increase happiness: eat meat once per week, eat vegetarian lunches, and replace beef with plant-based foods
People aren’t very interested in solving climate change. But they ARE interesting in becoming happier. Can we harness that interest to boost behaviors that are good for our happiness AND the climate? Liz Dunn

People who condemn racism are seen as more racist but not any warmer or more competent. People who condemn generosity are seen as more stingy, AND less warm and competent.
What happens when we dunk on others? People infer we must be the OPPOSITE. (If they think that’s a bad thing, they think less of us to boot)
Eg, “bad takes” = “bad people”

Children think talking about what others did is okay but it’s more okay to talk about what you did
Gossip?! Gossip!! Kids think it’s okay to talk about others (but that it’s more okay to talk about what you did vs what others did), and that’s true whether what what they did is good or bad. @drmeltemyucel.bsky.social

Children talk a lot about other kids breaking and following rules, but very rarely what other kids look like
What do children gossip about? Kids tell their parents a lot about what other kids DO, but not so much what they look like. @drmeltemyucel.bsky.social

Photos of respectable vs non-respectable communities of “Oak Ridge” used in experimental manipulation
Plot depicting a significant interaction between race and respectability, such that protests in Black (but not White) communities received less positive reactions if the community was not “respectable”
Does non-violent protest work for everyone? Not necessarily. People feel less sympathy and respond less positively to “non-respectable” Black protestors and protests in “non-respectable” Black communities. - Michael Perez

Ads highlighting health disparities reached 1200 more users than ads highlighting economic disparities, and overwhelmingly performed better on social media A/B ad testing
What kind of disparities motivate change? Learning about health disparities between Black and White Americans increased support for action and more ad clicks on social media, more than learning about disparities in economics or belonging - Riana Brown #SESP

People who watched the movie scenes in scrambled order were better at raising their hand as directed than participants who watched the intact film (whether the ending was spoiled or not)
“Bang! You’re Dead” - does finding out the ending eliminate the suspense? No it did not: spoilers didn’t make it any easier to focus on your goal (ie raising your hand every time you hear the word “gun”). Anna-Lisa Cohen #SESP #psychscisky #socialpsych
at #sesp in madison, after all. let me know if you are at the conference and want to connect. don't be shy! happy to talk about publishing in Psychological Inquiry, ai, methods, forecasting, wisdom or cultural change.
